guess the car has way to many miles... seems like i broke my steering gear or at least it's on it's way out. when i hit a bump of any notice it throws the wheels all about as if one had a flat tire. the rest of the steering is practicly new. any ideas what it could be or if in fact it is the gear?

 

Jack it up and have a look underneath. It could be anything.

Maybe the steering box is falling off the car.
Maybe the frame is cracked around the steering box.
Maybe you have a bad balljoint.
Maybe you have bent steering components.

Take it into an alignment shop and have them look at it if you don't know what you're looking for. Inspections are usually free.

 

alignment is good, everything is new beyond the box and the shaft. box is good and there are no cracks. car was taken care of but definately driven. there is play in the shaft with slight clunking though.

 

So where's the clunking sound coming from?

 

clunking was with the slight play in the shaft. turns out the gears were missing a few.... guess those wide tires weren't the best for it after all. anyhow rebuilt the gear and all is well.
