Brake/Rear defrost problem

Brake/Rear defrost problem
Whenever I step on the brake the rear defrost light turns on. The rear deforst doesnt work though, I disconnected it for the time being but now that winters comming it would be nice to be able to see through the rear hatch. Does anybody know why this is happening?? Thanks
