Black plastic box under hood?? smog pump??

the small black plastic box under my hood on the passenger side with hoses going to it. Is this the smog pump? there is a hose coming off the back of mine that is disconnected..looks like its for the 3 way cat to pump air into it, If that is what its for and i run more hose down to the cat and put it on the cat, would it melt the hose?is there special tubing needed? and if I hook it back up will I lose HP?

It's the AIR control valve. It connects to the lines running to the exhaust manifolds, catalytic convertor(s), and underneath and forward to the AIR pump. The connection to the exhaust manifold lines is basically heater hose. The connection to the cat(s) is via a rubber hose connecting to a steel line. The connection to the AIR pump is also by a large steel line that serves as a support for the valve.

Whether you need it or not depends on your state's/county emissions. It doesn't really cost any hp, but it does add a lot of clutter to the passenger side valve cover. I'd get rid of it if you don't have emissions to worry about.
