Big Problem

I have a 1988 camaro iroc-z 5.0 with a 5-speed tranny. MY car has always lagged a bit in acceleration before 1500 rpm but would be just fine after that. I firgured maybe it had to do with timing. But yesterday as I drove my car like normal the idle shot up to 1400 rpm and it wont go down. It will stay at 1400 in neutral and AT ALL TIMES. When I push the pedal to the floor the RPM Needle drops almost as if the car is going to die but then it will come back up very slowly (the pedal is pushed down the whole time).
I was told by the owner he installed an ads superchip. I dunno if this is true or not but could it be a cause? Also the car will overheat if i sit in traffic for more then 10 minutes, but will do just fine regular driving. Does anyone know whats wrong and how I can fix it? --Keep in mind my idle use to always be 1400 till i put in a new idle air control and whatever else the mechanic did(possibly timing) then the it idled niceley at 700 for about a month and a 1/2 till yesterday ---

Re: Big Problem

check the TPS (throttle position sensor) voltage. it should be .54V i believe w/ the throttle all the way closed (no gas at all).

or start the car up and let it idle, and if its at 1400 like ur saying,go and unplug the MAF sensor and see if the idle changes,if it doesnt than the MAF is probably bad,or the relay may be gone.

hope that helps

Re: Big Problem

Is the check engine light on? Any stored codes? To check for codes, connect a jumper (paper clip) from A to B. If you look at the ALDL, there is a tab in the middle on the outside of the connector. If the tab is up, A is the upper far right with B next to it. If tab is down, lower left corner is A. The check engine light (or service engine soon) will flash: first 1 then 2 three times for code 12. if code 12 four times no codes stored. After 3 code 12's, any other codes will flash the same way untill you get 12 again. Other than that it's a guessing game.

Re: Big Problem

GET THIS! as i was driving the car to my freinds house it still had the problem ive been talking about. But after about 4 blocks the car went back to normal!!!! 700 idle and almost no hesitaion on the throttle when i floor it!! Something funny is going on and i dunno what it is, maybe something is loose? I know theres still a little tiny lag when i floor it, so there is either a leak somewhere or something is loose. Hope you guys can help me out.

Re: Big Problem

i'd still get it checked out tho.....theres still a chance that the mass air flow sensor is goin out or the relays....my maf is going out and it has some good days and some bad days....but mines never had that problem although it is an 86 with tpi...and i believe yours was a 92 if i read correctly...n e way...good luck..

Re: Big Problem

I would bet it is the tps sensor. mine went bad and i was throwing NO CODES.... I would throw a volt meter on it and check it out! also, check for vacume leaks.

Re: Big Problem

I did have to adjust my tps sensor at one time, do you think it finnaly went dead? As for vacuum leaks, where exactly do i check for those?

Re: Big Problem

sounds like vacuum to me, High idle, condusive with throttle being open, o2 sensor says more air in exhaust, up the fuel and timing.

Re: Big Problem

The little thingy that wasnt connected is a little metal piece connected to the throttle which leads to a cable that pushes in some kind of rubber pump behind the driver side headlights. What is the purpose of this little rubber pump? cause now that its connected i fell the car running smoother and going faster!
