Axles for my 84

last week i snapped my axle shaft And yes i was doing a dough nut, i had just started to get the car to spin then boom. I was able to drive my car home so i automatically assume i have a posi rear end. when i pulled my rotor off the axle shaft came with it. The shaft snapped before the splines so i have no idea what size shaft i need So im going to take the cover off the differential to find out what my spline count. So any tips on doing this kind off job will be appreciated

have a new gasket, some black silicone handy,, jack the car up high. you have 10bolts to remove unless you have the 9 bolt rear,, youll have to remove the c-clip and she should pop out

Unless the diff has been changed, it will be a 10 bolt with 26 spline axles. The 10 bolt diff has the same length axles on both sides. Just go pull either side axle from a 82-89 that has a 10 bolt from the junkyard.

You may want to pull the cover and see if anything else is broken first. Ring and pinion teeth etc.

You're going to have to pull both axles anyway to get the center pin out of the carrier to remove the c-clips. You'll probably need a long broom handle to push the broken axle piece all the way out unless you pull the carrier right out.

While it's all apart, you might as well change the axle seals. Look to see how the axles look where they ride on the bearings and maybe change the bearings also.

You need to pull the pin (before) to get the axles out, not the axles to get the pin out.

from the looks of things on the diff. cover it looks like its been opened before. so any 10 bolt rear-end from 82-92 camaro the axle shafts are the same and inter-changeable?

No. The 90-92 will have 28 spline axles. Good upgrade if you can find them but you'll also have to change the carrier (posi) for 28 spline axles. Some 87-89 cars may have a 9 bolt diff.

OK, so my wording was wrong on pulling the axles. They'll both have to come out anyway so that the broken piece can be pushed through easier.

It wont just slide right out...you have to use a hammer and chisel to get it started out and then when theres about 3/4" of it hanging out, turn it around until its sticking toward you. Then use a big set of channel locks and twist it back and forth WHILE pulling toward you...that worked for me.

If you have to do this, it's been damaged. The pin should move freely with just finger pressure. It should literally fall out.
In LilMiss305's case he already has a broken axle so the pin may be damage too.

Don't know what you mean by "cross shaft"?
