Re: Anyone else not able to get on thirdgen.org?
I have been having TGO withdraws since I first discovered it was down. I usually read TGO and one or two other boards for hours on end after work, but mainly TGO. Not being able to do that, my nights have been slow and boring. Hopefully we will have our home back soon.
Update
Jan 26, 2005
Mail has been working all day. You can email webmaster@thirdgen.org or dtimmerm@thirdgen.org now.
Update on the data situation:
The message board database should NOT be affected by this outage. The database is on a seperate set of hard disks. I'll spend the time tomorrow making sure that it's still intact.
I have a tape backup I'll be going through tomorrow to see what I can recover of the web site itself. I am pretty optimistic that we'll only lose a few tech articles and some movies that should be easily replaceable.
If I am sure I have all the data I need to get site and message boards back up and running I'll get start planning that out tomorrow as well.
Check back tomorrow. I appreciate all of the thoughts, suggestions, and encouragement you all have emailed me today!
Thanks again.
Dirk

Mostly good news, minor disappointing news:
The database is is completely safe. When the boards come back up they will be fully intact. The msg board images are fine as well.
What is lost:
A few articles and movies and sounds. And the OS.
The Plan?:
The thirdgen.org server and the rest of the disks are 3 years old. Now is as good a time as any to upgrade the server. I have given it a lot of thought the past 2 days and think I have come to the following conclusions.
1) One server isn't enough for handling the database, webserver and email. 2 machines (one is needed for the website and mail, a second dedicated to the database since it gets the most action)
2) There is an obvious need for redundant data security. RAID 5, a reliable tape back up and off-machine HDD backup is ideal.
3) Hopefully you all can bear with me as I implement the changes and restore the site
Normally the upgrades would happen while the current server is up and running but that isn't posssible this time.
A number of people via email have graciously offered to possibly offer donations to provide for the site. If you wish to do so, please email me at dtimmerm@thirdgen.org for my mailing address or you may use PayPal with dtimmerm@thirdgen.org as the account.
Thanks again. I am truly sorry for all of this down time. Hopefully the site will be up sooner than later!
Check back soon!

I was going to say something before but.... why are you posting the same stuff that's on thirdgen.org?
I don't know about the rest, but I usually check thirdgen.org site way before I go to this one. Not that there is anything wrong with copying that stuff and pasting it here, I was just curious.
