any advice??
OK, well we all have interesting problems that we scratch our heads at. So, (as the name implies), got a 92 Z 5.7 auto. Got 340K miles on it (true--just shows you american can make high mileage cars); however, new roller cam engine from GM (only 15K miles on it now), new tranny, new fuel pump, ect.....car decided to give me a couple of new problems.
First the automatic trunk opener decides not to release the trunk while the trunk motor keeps running. Lovely; so I end up sqeezing from the back under the hatch and exposing the trunk motor and disconnecting the motor. To my understanding, some of the gears on these models are plastic and prone to wear (though 16 years it lasted). Its going to be a bitch to find a replacement. So anybody, know of any websites to visit (F-body motor sports dont have one and GM stop making them).
Second, my interior gauge fuse blows when I accelerate. WTF. This happened last year, but corrected itself after2-3 weeks, I never found the short. The guage cluster was sent off three years ago to California (apparently that is the only place that will repair the cluster) to fix some internel gauge light problem. When I replace the fuse, it works---for about 5-10 minutes. I dont know too much about electrical work on the cars.

On my 87 the trunk motor was bad when I bought it,heres what I did.
-Take the motor/gear assembly off and trash it -made me happy
-Then put just the hinge part on the car and bolt it in
-With 2 (maybe can get by w/ 1) vice grips, set the hinge at a level...clamp it and try to close the trunk
-Do this several times until you find a sweet spot when the trunk will close and stay shut w/o having to slam it and then weld it.
It works just like a normal hatch release except not automatic closing now. A lot cheaper than buying a replacement...they might sell them on Ebay so check that out if your looking to keep it.
As far as the cluster short,im not sure bro...maybe a wire got pinched when it was reinstalled or something? Try sticking a 5 amp higher fuse in it just in case the company that rebuilt it installed something in the circuit that is higher resistance now.

I tried with 15 and 20 amp fuse, both went. Im thinking that I would rather have that fuse blow than another other. Im going check out some sensors since this tends to happen when I accelerate??? Will keep informed.
In reference to the trunk, I kind of like the auto release (makes me feel like the car is not as ancient as it seems), I believe that larger plastic gear is the only thing broke; all of the other parts are functioning--I found the part at Fbodymotorsports fo $10. The motor is fine.
But, I found out that GMs 90s models have problems with those plastic gears.

To complete the story. The short was in the wiring harness and now fixed. As for the trunk, I got the rebuild kit and will fix it one time, next time it becomes manuel. Thanks to Rice Killer for responding the post.
I found the assembly, including the motor is needed at www.youngsfbody.com, its under hatch pull-down parts. I got items before from them, they seem reliable. A rebuild kit (includes the housing, screw, guides and bushings are around $75. I dont need the motor; however they sell it for $99. Ill check E-bay to see what's around.
FYI: I decided the hell with the automatic crap. It is now a manuel trunk. Junked the old motor and set the height of the latch. Done.
As for the internal gauge light fuse, I determined that within the wiring harness it is not under the hood; someplace under the dash (will keep on looking). I wonder if anybody else had problems with this?????

They have repair parts for the motor, and the headlight motors (which I know you dont need, but some of the firebird guys might).

And these guys have alot of parts to repair the rest of the stuff. Even gauge clusters.
