What are you building, a strip only car, a street-stip car or a daily driver?

That is a LOT of cam for a 305 and I would NOT recommend it for anything other than a strip only car. It would also require very steep rear gears and a very loose torque converter.

well my personal mechanic (aka an engineer i work with) talked to a guy who used that exact cam on his 87 305 camaro and he said it runs great.....he didn't say anything about the exact setup but i trust his advice.....ill mention what you said above.....he'll probably say something like "nah don't even worry about that"....if something doesn't work ill just make him fix it thanks for warning me tho

The reason I discourage it is also because it will require you to really build the engine for high rpm useage. The 305, due to its bore/stroke ratio, does not lend itself to much beyond the 5500 to 6000 rpm range without expensive upgrades. That type of cam only produces power in the higher rpm ranges, and does so at the expense of lower rpm driveability and power.

It would have a very soggy low end, precisely the range you spend most of your time driving in.

It is just a horrible choice for any 305 intended as a daily driver.

can you suggest a cam that would better suit my needs...addressing both my desire for more HP and drivability?

Since you are using a roller cam, I think, the duration is OK but I would limit the lift to the .450 to .460 range.

High lift, above .460, requires reworking the heads.

the cam my buddy originally suggest was 460 lift....then he talked to someone he knew with the 488 and he suggested that one to me, ill talk to him, 460 sounds more reasonable....ive been reading up cams and i am starting to understand what the duration and lift mean and the effects so we'll see

thanks again for the info
