86 LG4, a few questions for you guys...
Hey guys. Well, I have been meaning to hollow out my cat for a long time now, and I finally got to it the other day. Boy what a difference. Very little if no hesitation anymore, and you can feel it when I take a hill. I used to have to have it in D, now it takes big hiles in OD just fine. Anyway here is whats up. So now since I have nothing to really "clean" the gases coming out, it smells really strong, very fuely, almost rich smelling. Nothing like classics that run without pollution controls or cats. Its a very irritating smell. On the freeway its fine, but from stop light to stop light it can be annoying. I am wondering what causes it to make this smell, I would be fine with a classic fuelie type odor, but this almost smells like B-12 or some kind of alcohol smell. I know the computer governs what the mixture is set at, but something must be up to make it smell that rich. Also, I have noticed a slight improvement in fuel economy, but i still dont get as good mileage as I used to when I first got the car oh about 2 years ago. I have tuned it up, new plugs, wires, cap rotor, ox sensor, knock sensor, rebuilt carb, new alt, new bat, flowmaster, k&n, dual snorkel, all since I bought it, but i still think she sould send me down the track at a little better than 16.5??? Either way, I just wanna know what I can do for the time being to get a little better run out of her.
I am thinking of purchasing a perf chip just for kicks, since my car is all stock anyway, and maybe it would help set some of the values back to what they should be.
Also, I want to check the timing, because I think it is off.
when I first got the car, it was idleing pretty rough, but its smooth now. But since i got it, the motor has always had this kind of rocking back and forth type deal. I suspected loose mounts, but nothing like that. Before I took the cat off and hollowed it, when you romped on it it was almost like it was missing it hesistated so bad. That has since gone away pretty significantly, which leads me to believe the cat was more fugged up than I even thought.
But any ideas, concerns suggestions are very appreciated guys...
I know some headers and a full 3" catback would really wake her up, and since I am gonna be building a 350 this winter, i figure I might slap that stuff on anyway, and just unbolt it for the 350 later. Well thanks guys!
