Question 84 Z28 Emission Question

I purchased a 84 Z28 camaro and it didnt have a motor or trans when i bought it and i was just wondering since it is pre 85 what do i need to make it street legal and to get it inspected. I dont think it will take much but any info from someone with an 84 would be very helpful

Since the car is pre 85 i dont think i need catylitic converters and no where on the harness did i see a plug for a o2 sensor but the headers that i have there is no tap to use one and i am not sure if anyone will legally inspect it. Since when i started all i had was a body i have no way of knowing what a stock car has.

Re: 84 Z28 emissions question

Every state, every county for that matter is different as far as emission testing goes. Some test for ceratin things and other countys don't like NOx for example. You will still need a cat to pass the visual, and probably the emission testing itself. You will not need an O2 sensor as long as you can get the carb tuned in right, I have seen a few carbed cars with o2 sensors. Its not like the newer cars that if you have a check engine light on the automatically fail emissions. So pretty much, at least where I live, as long as it has the cats and EGR if it was originally equiped with an egr engine, the usually have a tag under the hood, and pass the sniffer it sound be set to go. Hope this helps a little bit.

Re: 84 Z28 emissions question

yeah i guess i didnt think about the differences between states, i live in texas and as of now they dont actually hook up the car to a computer to check but in our state if the vehicle is pre 1985 i have heard that you dont even need converters but i do appreciate your info and if i was to change states it could be helpful.

Re: 84 Z28 emissions question

You need to contact TXDOT and find out what the law is for your county. At some point, 20 or 25yrs, emmisions are no longer required, just safety inspection.
