700R4 Weird Problem

I just picked up an '88 Firebird (305 TBI) for a parts car... and on the way back I was noticing that overdrive wasn't working. It would go into overdrive...but as soon as I'd try to accelerate, it was like it wouldn't hook---and the RPMs'd steadily lift up (not like a quick shift into third...it was a very slow 1500 RPM climb up) til I was back in third... but if I pushed it even farther, the RPMs would drop back down and she'd shift into fourth...I couldn't keep my speed constant. I had to either be off the gas completely or accelerating to stay in fourth...

Any ideas? Transmission shot, or just OD burnt out??

Thanks guys.

I've never rebuilt a tranny before... How much would it cost, on average? Would it be cheaper to just throw another tranny in? She's just my "moveable" parts car at this point, so I really don't give a damn if the "new" transmission is old and crusty just like the stock.

well if you pull it.You can find somebody to rebuild it for$400-500.Or you can buy a rebuild kit yourself and go for it.Like you said its a movable parts car so who gives a damn go for it do the rebuild yourself.time for your ***** to grow bigger

How much money you got and what do you want it to do? If you are wanting a tranny for a regular car, try doing it yourself or get help. If you want it for a performance car, get someone to do it for you. It should cost about $1500. At least that is what I thought www.rosslertrans.com did it for me for. Lasted 3.5 years behind an LPE 383 before it broke again.
