5 speed L98 ?!!
Recently at a car show in my area, a guy had an 88' Iroc. His back bumper had the 5.7 liter tpi badge on it and it had a T-5 tranny. So I said "I thought L98s were'nt available with T-5s" and he replied "Well mine is one of a few 1LE's that came with it" I was reluctant to call BS because A. he had the disc equiped rear-end like 1LEs have B. it only had fan controls (no a.c.) and C. I was'nt sure if his story was true. So my Question is could 1LEs be ordered with a manual transmission or did he install it himself?
That guy was a tool. Only 4, yes FOUR 1LEs were made in 88. I seriously doubt this was one of them.
Anyway... the 1LE was in fact available with a T5... but only when bolted to a TPI 305, never an L98. There was never a 350 5-speed combo in a thirdgen, regardless of what anybody thinks they may have seen.
Just an FYI tho... the 1LE cars had no air conditioning, no t-tops, no fog lamps, bigger sway bars, dual piston calipers with huge rotors up front, and aluminum calipers with large rotors in the back. Pretty easy to identify.
