455 CID in a 3gen ...possible?

Sup guys !

I need some help, real fast... i'm thinking about buying a 455 ci. big block (used to be in a Buick Electra) , is it possible to mount such an engine in a 3gen Camaro ? Will it fit in the engine compartment ? Maybe someone has done this before?

thanks guys!

Good luck. Thats all I have to say. I have seen a 400 in a 3rd gen. If a 455 is bigger in dimensions. Wow... good luck buddy!

Whats the big deal about a 400 in a 3rd gen? They are the same size as a 305 or 350.

Here is my 400 in my '87 Camaro LT: http://www.njfboa.org/JustinImages/Mighty400.jpg

The 455 is a Buick/Olds/Pontiac motor, which (IIRC) is larger externally than a sbc, but smaller than a bbc. No problem as far as fitting it in a 3rd gen, but you will prolly need a cowl hood.

Yeah it can be done, and for the record a 455 is not a big block, its a BOP block, they are all the same size (with the possible exception of the rocket I cant recall) you can put 326 heads on a 455 if you want.

At least I know pontiac blocks are

That is definitely cool. I have a friend who put a 455 Olds in a 79 Z28, and has thought about putting the same engine in his 86 Z28.

At one time I had a 455 Buick that I was considering putting in my 83 Firebird, but I did not have the time or resources to pull it off.

No, that pattern is different. You should be able to find an adapter plate though....

Nope.. different bellhousing pattern I believe. I believe they require BOP tranny's.. but I am not positive.

FWIW, the hot ticket motor is either the '73 Cadillac 501 with ported 472 heads, or the '65 / '66 Olds 425 with 4V heads. fairly lightweight engines relative to the displacement, and the 425 has a superior rod/stroke ratio than the 455, PLUS a forged steel crank for nitrous use.

I saw a '91ish Mustang with a stock cadillac motor in it at the Hot Rod Magazine pump gas drags. It inhaled incredible amounts of nitrous and was faster than stink.

thanx for all the input ! I'm still wondering if i should put a 455 in my camaro, since it's my only car and daily driver...
anyway, if i do get this engine it'll go with a TH400 trans.
