3rd gen tach problem

SO i just picked up my 87 GTA last weekend. Tpi 350, and most of the little toys. The only problems i have discovered is that there is an exhaust manifold leak. Which is an easy fix. and My tahc is reading 1/2 of what it should when im on the throttle. At idle it sits at around 700-800, and it jumps a bit cause there is a misfire at idle. But when i get on teh gas and Pin it, it will never go over 3K. Is this an electrical problem thats an easy fix, or should i just swap the cluster? btw its got the 8K tach in it.

Does it have an MSD ignition? I had to get a tach filter for mine. Allen

Check the wiring at the distributor, could be a gauge problem.

no the car is almost totally stock, the only things it has are an exhaust and a shift kit. So i know its ntohgin aftermarket messin with the signal. IM thinkin it is prolly the cluster, but i was hopin it was something else.
