383 stroker

Does anyone know about a price range it would cost to build a 383 stoker, putting good heads , cam, ect...I just want to get an idea of how much it would cost me.

"How fast do you want to go?" still applies. Bigger hp and torque and rpm costs more. Without some defined goals for performance, driveability, reliability, any money estimate would just be a "rectal extraction". If "good heads" run $1500-$2000, I'd figure at least double that for a basic 383 engine if you are very good at assembling engines, and have a good core engine. You are only looking a parts and machine work costs there.

You might try contacting a couple of engine designers/builders for an estimate based upon your goals. IOW, tell them where you want to go and let them figure how to get there.

That doesn't answer your question specifically, but IMO you should probably think over $5000 rather than under. There's almost no upper limit if you are going for mega power.

My $.02

I'm currently building up my 94 Z to be a 383. I spent $ 1700 on the heads alone (AFR), and have a complete pricelist put together by my knowledgeable friend -- if you want a peek at it, let me know and I'll send it over. I'm going with all forged internals on mine which adds about $750 right there, but it's good for the reliability factor - I don't want to have to do it again in 1-2 years. A good estimate (always estimate high if possible) is $ 2,000 for the heads, $ 4,000 for the upgrade parts, $ 750 for a good clutch if you have a manual, or $ for a torque convertor in an auto... and then maybe other little upgrades that may be helpful like a bigger oil pan and better drive shaft and such. Then add in labor! Sounds like a lot of money but if it's done right and if you can get some help on it, it should run very fast and last a long time for ya. Good luck!

I've already spent close to $5k on my turbo 383, and I don't even have the motor assembled or a turbo.

You could easily build a pretty stout 383 for what I've invested already. I just go way overboard on my projects.

Back in 96 I spent 5K for an assembled shortblock. I sent them the heads, cam, timing cover and oil pan and they made sure everything was clearenced for it. It was done at LPE.

Like everyone said, how fast ya' wanna go? You could put that $800 EBay kit in, and "technically" have a 383. Granted it would run like crap and probably not be reliable, you'd still have one. Name your power goals.

What do you want out of the 383? You can build a budget 383 that will perform and be a good daily driver. Or, like those of us who are nuts, you can go all out and spend a fortune.

That would be no problem for a budget 383. All your power comes from the heads, so that's where you don't want to get cheap. You could use the SCAT cast stuff or the Eagle ESP stuff and build a really nice 383 for street use.

If the rotating assembly is balanced nicely you could support 500HP on a cast crank with forged pistons and recon rods and a 2 bolt main block.
