350 swap
350 swap
is it easy to swap in a 350 V8 with 4 speed into a 3rd gen camaro. i dont even have one but im thinking about buying one and i have a 350 out of my other 78' camaro to put in it. what modifications are needed?
If you buy one with a V8 already in it, the swap is extremely easy. However, in your '78 the oil dipstick is on the driver's side and in the thirdgen's its on the passenger side. I think the change happened in 1980. Also, remember the rear main seal changed from a two-piece to a one-piece design in 1986. That will affect your flywheel choice, but if you keep the one from the '78 you'll be ok.
since they are both generation 1 small blocks either tranny will bolt to the bellhousing
since the third gen in your sig is an 83 you dont have to worry about that one piece main seal
now if the 83 has a manual tranny, then you are already better off to swap in that 4 speed manual, if the 83 is automatic then you can just bolt it up to the engine and go
the issue with the flywheel is not as bad as you think
there are 2 sizes 153 teeth and 168 teeth (i think)
the larger flywheel requires the use of an offset mounting bolt starter, the smaller uses the inline mounting bolt starter
if your using the manual tranny, you have to make sure you have a clutch and pressure plate that works with your flywheel, with the automatic flexplate/torque converter
but if you ask me, rather than working with the flywheel you have, its not that hard to get a flywheel that fits and a starter to match, 153 teeth flywheels for a 2 piece rear main seal shouldnt be hard to come by
