Actually back in the early '90's when I owned a F.I. 2.8 auto firebird, I outran a Monte Carlo SS (305 equipped). I beat the snot out of that 2.8 and it just kept on running. I actually miss that car sometimes.

U should be beatin with a cane poll for saying stuff like that. I forgot about the 2.8, we have a blazer with a 2.8 and my family argues over who has to drive it bc they hate it so much.

Re: 305 v 350 poll

While i relize that there is no replacement for displacement.. lemme ask you this.
Why is teh 5.0 Mustang idolized so? AFter all, it is only a 302.
Well, teh LG4 is a 305.. 2-cubic inches larger. Why is the 305 absolute sheit? I mean.. common, 302, 305, same damn thing..
I also relize that the 350 has a larger bore; but realisticly, is that .?? inches more than a 305 REALLY going to gain you a lot? AFter all.. a 302 will lay out a great many 350's relatively cheaply, so what is the problem with a 305 laying out 350's?

1) What is a "cane poll" ?
2) a heavy-*** blazer vs a stripped down firechicken...which chassis do you think is lighter? I was over 115 mph when I was walking away from that Monte SS. It was no monster, but certainly enough to hold its own against a wimpy carb'd 305.

The 302 is a different design, forged internals, etc... Easy to spray when you know the motor will hold together. Even so, I can't even count the number of people who pulled the 302 and dropped in a 351.

all i can say is if your gonna go throught the hassle of pulling a motor and dumping one in you may as well go all the way.......my burbs got $9000.00 under the hood in a bored out 396 with all of the goodies and even though its a big heavy truck it eats 5l mustangs for breakfast!

Re: 305 v 350 poll

lol, whoa eas up I was only kidding. A cane pole is exactly what it says, a pole made out of cane. But seriously, the only thing a 2.8 is good for is a boat anchor. Ours just got a tune up and the gas mileage improved to a whoping 8 mpg.

Performance-wise - yeah, a boat anchor IS all it's good for. Mine was fuel injected ('88) and I would get well over 20mpg on a regular basis. I debated stuffing a 350 in it for a long time before I sold it, but decided it would cost to much to beef up the rest of the drivetrain.

I wasn't flaming you - just teasing ya!

First of all the 305 is 3 cubic inches larger than the 302, not 2. But that aside, the ford 302 is the same setup as the chevy 302. 4-inch bore and a 3-inch stroke. the 305 is something like a 3.75-inch bore and a 3.48-inch stroke. that makes a BIG difference. The 302 while it uses less cubes, it utilizes a larger bore, and a shorter stroke, which is a great combination for making big power, just not a ton of torque. The 305 uses the 350 stroke with a smaller bore, which was delveloped to be a smog motor. Dosnt make any power up top, but makes somewhat decent torque down low. Both the Ford and Chevy have a ton more potential than the 305. Because the bore is so much smaller, you just cant ever fully un-shroud the valves and get the damn thing to breathe right. The 350 though would definatly be your best bet for streetability and power. I used to be dumb, I used to own a 305 and think it was fast (I actually had 2 a 85 LG4 Z28 and a TPI 87 Iroc) But then I got smart and bought a 4th gen with a t-56, and I havnt looked back, although I do sometimes miss my 85 (my first car)

Do yourself a favor.. Build a nice 355. You can easily make well over 400 streetable RWHP from it with a good top end and induction. Good luck getting that from a 305 for the same price..

Anyways what I trying to say is... 305=Gutless! and anyone that wants to dispute that can meet me at the track when I get my motor back together! LOL

Re: 305 v 350 poll

^ Well.. not to brag or be called a bs'er or anything, but incase you havn't heard.. I am going to be making 300hp, and 350lbs from my 305.. I used to say for under $800.. but no that I am finding good parts even cheaper, it is gonna be more like under $600 or $500.

Re: 305 v 350 poll

If you have the money i would suggest getting a crate engine.. Something along the lines of ZZ4, ZZ430, or the Ramjet. You will get reliability and horsepower and a warranty. I know too many people that tried building their "dream engines" and had to do it over more than once.. By the time they get done they could have just bought a crate engine and been done with it.

boost cures any problem a motor has with making power. thats why so many people run some sort of forced inudction setup on their fox bodies.

tell me something, when was the last time you saw an NA 302 fox body that was actually fast compared to the amount of money he put in it?
