305 v 350 poll
305 v 350 poll
Alright I asked the question what do about my engine so I'll let you guys decide. Should someone with a third gen camaro (LG4) 305 stick with the 305 or swap it for a 350. Many people say that the 350's make quite bit more power but I doubt it
Re: 305 v 350 poll
It all depends on what you want out of your camaro. Do you want insane hp/torque that makes it difficult to be a daily driver? Or do you want something to simply blow away the ricers that flood our streets? That is the question. You will get a variety of biased opinions, and some honest here. Many guys with 350's will say get a 350, guys with the 305's will say keep the 305. You gotta decide this one yourself on basically what you want your camaro to do.

Just my $.02...
Re: 305 v 350 poll
I voted for the 350 because IMO the 350 can be so much more. When you spend dollar for dollar the potential realized is much more. Personally I would prefer more CI's but then that is me and if you aren't sure stay with mild 350. Granted you can build a 305 to kick a$$ on a 350. But a comparably built 350 will be the victor. Plus a 305 does have its limits. A CID limit of approximately 345 CI for the 305 vs the 396 based on a 350 or a 454 CI SBC based on the World 400 block. You just have to decide how wild you want to go. The way I see it the more you get the more you will want so do what you can afford and enjoy.

Re: 305 v 350 poll
The 305 is seriously one of the worse motors that GM has ever built, right behind the Iron Duke (4 cylinder diesel GM once made). A 305 doesnt even have a 4" piston, compared to the 350. Hands down the 350 has WAY more power potential, gets more bang for the buck out of mods, and is most certaintly streetable. 350

Re: 305 v 350 poll
For high 13's in a camaro or low 14's an ddecent cam 305 will do fine and only with going to a 2000 stall mild cam 9.5 compression w/od auto and gearswhich is very drivable. or a stock cam 350 with gears so no lope with gears is doable for perfect daily driving 13 sec car with a/c and no gutting.

While it has a smaller bore and less cubic inches it hardly the worst engine GM ever made. Lasted 25 years or so
My Players IROC did 14.5 with no mods. Which makes it faster then some of the "muscle cars" from the 60's.

That being said...if you have a T-5, you are better off sticking with the LG4 since a T5 probably* wont hold up to the power of a modded 350 - so you'd have to invest more $$$ in a tranny swap to a T56 or auto...
My advice is that if you wanna go fast, trade up to 350 TPI motor'd car...then start modding from there. To me it makes more sense than dumping $3k into a motor build that the rest of the drivetrain just can't handle.
* Disclaimer: I know there are folks out there running sub-13's on T5's, but the majority of folks who try this fail.
