Upgrading the 2.9x rear end on a 1982 to 3.42. I am told the housing must be changed if you are doing this swap. I am thinking not, but that maybe the complete guts are different for the high ratio vs low ratio. Yes?

 

i was told that going from a 2.7X gear to a 3.73 would require a new diff housing and all other crap. i was quoted 1100 from a shop to have it done if i wanted it to last.

 

if u got a used carrier from a 4th gen all u whould need is gears and the kit

 

That totally sucks. What a totally Chevrolet thing to do. Buying a new rear end for a Z28 just to get an axle ratio lower than 3.00.
So if I can find a 3.08 F Body housing I can stuff a 3.42 or 3.73 in?

 

I actually found out on 3rdgen.org that the 3.08 works with the higher than 3.00 gears and it is lower than 3.08(3.43 etc) that requires the different housing.

 

just get thicker gears. I have 4.10's in 2-carrier size so I didnt need anything else to swap from 2.73's....
