1992 Firebird Odometer help?

hey guys, i have a 1992 firebird that i bought as a project car. when i bought it, the odometer and speedo both worked, but i decided to take it for a spin today instead of my '02 Z and noticed that the odometer doesn't work any more. what do i need to do to fix it?
Thanks,
Josh

well the odometer is driven off the speedo cable by this little gear dingy, i'd put a new speedometer in and 0 it out, write down the current mileage and when you apply for plates check the beyond mechanical limit reading for mileage and forget it,

outside of that.... an odometer isnt really necessary, except to track gas mileage, and change oil, hell i dont care about gas mileage, and to change oil, i just do that enough anyway as is, but mine sees maybe 7000 miles a year and maybe 4 oil changes, so that's just my opinion

Same thing happened to me, i just replaced the cable.. They tend to get brittle and break for no reason after a while

No cable on a 92. VSS with electrical connections into the ECM. I had a 92 Camaro and that's how mine was set up.

Computer drives it and the speedo. If the speedo works but the ODO took a dump it's probably the fault of the ODO itself in the gague cluster.

You can get GM to sell you a new/rebuilt gague cluster and they can put it on a machine and set the ODO to match your old one before you put it in. I had this done for my 91 Blazer (same setup with VSS, ECM and such as a Camaro). When I told them I needed them to spin the ODO forward to 210K miles the guy at the counter almost fell off his chair.

Damon's right. The birds went to VSS in 86 or 87. I think 87. Either way, it's probably the gear/cog assembly in the cluster itself. Does it reset and just not roll forward? Pull it apart and check it out. I fixed my old one with epoxy and a paperclip.

Sometimes just resetting the trip afew times will get them rolling again also.
