Re: 1986 Engine Decision!!!

Well whats the cheapest route to go then? Should I just go find a 350 core from a junker? Will any 350 do and what happens to the emissions junk? What parts will swap over for now until I can replace some?

Re: 1986 Engine Decision!!!

The cheapest route is DEFFENINTLY rebuilding your 305 w/ performance parts. Most any 350 will do though, if you do decide to go that route. Just toss the emmisions crap, and most of your bolton parts from the 305 will swap to the 350. (such as heads, intake, crap like that.. *as far as I know*)

Tell us a little more about your car....

Auto or stick, how many miles? Is it all stock? What do you plan on doing with the car (racing)? How much money do you have to spend?

Re: 1986 Engine Decision!!!

The car has fairly low miles but I cant remember off the top of my head, we rebuilt the carb and it has a low performance but new radiator. Its the 5 speed on the LG4. I am 16, have like 1000 dollars myself and Im getting a job over the summer. My dad will also chip in for interior and anything to get it working smoothly, he also gave me some more money to spend for Christmas. I will not be driving this in the winter so this will be a summer car so I can do basically whatever I want. I want something I can easily be proud of in the end without have to drop a 454 ci which gets 5 mpg. I dont know if I mentioned this before but is a the Q-jet and not the crossfire, tpi, whatnot.

Well, with that stock Q-Jet you are getting a good 20-25 mpg.. how is that for good mileage?

Re: 1986 Engine Decision!!!

I created a page on cardomains, here it is. http://www.cardomain.com/member_page...page_id=756169

Haha this may look a "little" trashed but I scrapped it so I can install carper, new speakers and sail panels, fix the hatch and a few other things eventually but there the motor.

Re: 1986 Engine Decision!!!

put a 350 in it if you plan on wanting to go faster than anyone else.

if you would like to be average, leave the 305 in it.

if it was me,i would find a 350 and start to build it up as you get some money. a good 350-400 HP motor is one like in my sig. hopped up Vortec heads can be bought for 500-600,find an intake off ebay (paid less than 150 for mine),bought the Comp Cam and life is almost good.

then you could get some heddman headers and y-pipe,and gears later on down the road.

hope that helps

Re: 1986 Engine Decision!!!

A hopped-up 305 is DEFF. not average. A hopped up 305 has just as much potential as a hopped up 350.
