Tuning an edelbrock carb !!!

hey guys , Ive never tuned an edelbrock carb before and this one seems to be running really rich. Its a 600 performer with electric choke. Its really bad when its cold . If you floor it in neutral it just dumps fuel smelling smoke out the back. It stutters if you let her wide open. Its on an 84 T/A with a 305 lg4 . Only thing on it is a flowmaster . Anyone tried a 600 performer on one of these ??? Its not fast but Id like it to at least be as fast as it can be , it feels and smells like its choking on fuel. It used to be my beater but now its my wifes car.
thanks in advance , justin

Re: Tuning an edelbrock carb !!!

before you start adjusting any of the settings find out if the carb is sitting to low on your intake,if it is then go out and buy a spacer for it.

if your the right hight of your intake then your mixture screws might need to be set,run your car untill its at operating temp, set your idle where you think it should be,adjust your mixture screws one side at a time turning each one untill the rpms peak, when the rpms peak turn each screw so the rpms drop about 500rpm,then adjust your idel from there.

from there your choke could be out.

1.Take the POS out from under your hood.
2. Clean it up and sell it.
3. Take the money and treat your wife to dinner.
4. Buy a holley 600 with vac. secondarys (cheap on ebay).
5. Set it ONCE with a $10 vaccum gauge.
6. Eliminate future headaches and keep the wife happy.
7. Refer to #6, this is key to keeping you happy!

Re: Tuning an edelbrock carb !!!

well I think that helped a bit , its still smokin but its not chokin anymore and the smoke doesnt smell as rich as it did. I think the carb either sux or a 600 is to big for an lg4. I bought it from a friend who had it on his 70 cougar for 100 miles , ditched it and got a 650 demon (much better than the 'brock on his car , but his motors souped up). I think im gonna be doing plugs this weekend as its still sounds like its got a lil stumble at idle (slight , like a mild cam or something). I bet the plugs are fouled (thier due anyways). Thanks for the help man .
merry xmas Justin

oh yeah , its still slow..... need to get to fixing that .

Re: Tuning an edelbrock carb !!!

sounds like shes still dumping the fuel in to fast,go to a parts store, ask for the guy that knows performance and tell him your set up and that you need a spacer for your carb.it more than likely needs to be lifted about an 1/2 in or so.
if your intake is stock than i would say you definatly need a spacer.

good luck keep us updated.

Re: Tuning an edelbrock carb !!!

now its acting a little funny , if I cut it off it starts right back up , but If I cut it off and go back to it 15 or 20 mins later I have to put in the gas pedal a bit while cranking it . Altho a couple of times its started up right away like normal. I miss the quadrajet already lol. Also the thing is already on an almost 3/4 inch adapter/spacer on the stock intake.

Re: Tuning an edelbrock carb !!!

I have the LG4 as well.. nothing special, right I dont have everything on yet, but that is waht the winter seasn is for. I did my own calculations, as well as some Desktop Dyno calculations, and they all revolve around the 300 hp, 320-350 torque mark.
I would rather not disclose what I have done until I have the dyno-proven hp, but lemme tell ya; heads are NOT one of the things this 17 YEAR OLD is going to be buying I cant afford a $300 Flowmaster catback, let alone $2000 for good heads

EDIT: Ooops.. jsut noticed you have the HO version; I have the base LG4..

Re: Tuning an edelbrock carb !!!

my 84 z28 has over 180k miles on it and runs like new , it will walk the trans am . The 97 would walk them both if you combined the 2 305s somehow lol
. my ole 84 z28 was my second car (I was sixteen , first was an 87 v8 sc , lasted 6 months lol). Im very attatched to the ole z28 , I dont need it at all , in fact Id be better off without it but I love it what can I say. Its like its namesake. Its my companion ....... I think Im wierd but I know alotta car guys like me.
