The "what would you give up to save weight" thread.
T-tops.
Not knowing what will be offered, I'm not sure what I'd give up, however I'd be willing to pay more for carbon fiber body panels to save weight. (Not all the panels... hood, doors, trunk lid, etc.)
But, I agree with Dragoneye... this whole chicken-little mentality on weight is getting stale. Isn't one thread enough?
Or perhaps we can find something else to debate over, like... "Should GM offer a turbo ecotec in the new Camaro."

We've already done acouple of those......
It'll probably be too heavy for that.

EDIT: I'd pay abit more for weight savings too.

I meant no disrespect, it's just...this particular topic is getting to that point, "stale", as said above.
Scott has told us that weight is a huge factor in the engineer's minds...and I believe him. So what they can do; they'll do. Talking about it more after that, I think, is what's aging the wieght issue.
Again, no disrespect!

32,000 for a modern 3400 pound car with a nice set of seats like what's offered in the WRX or STi (read: RECARO), no power crap (I would like power locks but would be willing to part with power windows if it meant the doors weren't stupid-heavy like with the 3th gen), no suped-up sound system, 18-inch satin aluminum wheels, no nav, stripped of some sound insulation, no removable roof, no leather. An optioned-out car like this would probably be more like 24,000 (a slightly stripped 'stang) but I'd be willing to pay an extra 6,000 if the platform were more expensive to produce because of more aluminum/magnesium/balsa/whatever else, like in the vette. The extra bit of handling finesse, better feel, better gas mileage, better braking, better experience on track days, noticably reduced tire wear, and a more compliant(while still stiff) suspension is worth 6000 dollars to me. That would be pushing what I'd be willing to pay but I'd pay it.
Give me that, with a 430hp smallblock, and the looks of the camaro, and you'll have my money. It'd get mid to high 20's for gas mileage too, and be more enjoyable for spirited driving. I'll pull out the back seats myself though. I want them in case I have kids.

GM needs to focus the weight savings where it matters - yes, deleting power steering, air conditioning, and the back seat will save weight. But the focus should be on light weight alloy suspension components - extensively. If they use alloy extensively on the suspension, you will notice marked improvement in handling than if they use solid steel suspension but delete the power seats and steering wheel.
If they use the alloy control arms, springs, forks, and even rear diff output shafts, you will notice substantial performance enhancement.

Cheryl said it was going to have a trunk so Im assuming that there wont be a hatch that needs to be compensated for via reinforcement. Then again she also said it was getting T-Tops a good year after we knew that was highly unlikely so I take that with a grain of salt.
Honestly I m not smart enough to know what else there is on the car to give up. I certainly wouldnt give up the IRS!
