Then GM had to go and screw THAT formula up too, just like they did with Z28 in general, and made the later 4th gens 1LEs a minor suspension update and little else.
btw, ZL1 all the way.
Yes Z28 = camaro is a true statement; More precisely though, Z28 = 16 second 1/4 mile, sub-200hp V8 camaro is a more apt description of how the majority of them were manufactured and thus remembered.

Re: What should the LS7 Super car be called
I agree that the SS and Z/28 should be affordable and that the ZL1 should be the "super car" of the group. It should boast more power, bigger wheels, a special body package and/or striping and all that stuff. Make it look a lot different than the standard camaro's so it makes sense to pay extra and so that other people know it! Unlike the C5 corvette Z06, which only an enthusiast could probably tell the difference at first glace from a standard vette. Make this thing look insane!
Re: What should the LS7 Super car be called
SS and Z28 should be the fast but somewhat affordable high performance camaros. For something to be ZL1 it would have to be the ultimate top dog camaro: have incredible performance, low numbers and have a high price.

And here's more information on the prototype car that was built...

And to answer your first question, how many $40,000 GT-500's does Ford expect to build for my2007? Hint...it's in the thousands.

Chevy won't sell more than 300 $40,000 Camaro's.
That's where the Vette sucks for Chevy and that's where Ford gets off easy. Their top car is soo far out of reach financially that there is NO business case for "spending a little more" for the top car.
Re: What should the LS7 Super car be called
I want to purchase a Z28 and I doubt I'll be able to (and if I can I'm not going to want to) do that if it's a $40k LS7 car. Z28 should be affordable, who cares who's the top dawg, as long as the Z28 is affordable.
Now if they find some way to make the LS7 mass produced w/ no dry sump system and such and get it's cost down to where it's not really much more than a LS2 or whatever the 6.2l will be called the sure, stick it in a Z28. But if it means $40k then put it in a ZL1 or something.
I personally think it's silly to think calling the LS7 powered car a ZL1 is diluting the name. I mean it's a small block but it's a 427 ci all aluminum 500+ hp screamer, it's about as fitting a setup to bear the ZL1 name as we're likely to get in the production Camaro or Corvette ever again...

Re: What should the LS7 Super car be called
This poll did exactly what it was intended to do. Argue the reality of the future top dog and the past rather than fish stories of what the SS and Z28 were. I love the 69 cross ram Z28 for being a road handler, but it was no ZL1. Neither was the 396 SS for that matter. Nor should they have been. The ZL1 was 427 alum big block $4000 option on a $4000 car. For reference, the LS7 427 small block can be had for $14,511.90 http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results...partnumber=LS7
The LS7 produces 500 hp an exorberant amount the same way the 427 ZL1 did. The only thing that would be more appropriate would be a 427 or 572 aluminum big block that would be unmarketable because it would throw off the weight of the vehicle. Though I got to admit the width of the concept could be adventageous here. The ZL1 LS7 makes the most sense. Seems 55% agree at this point.

Re: What should the LS7 Super car be called
Hey people how many have forgot already the the car Matt at GMMG started putting the first Z06 motor in and Scott took it around to alot of shows before they started building the phase1-2-3 cars. It was a ZL1 by name and I was lucky enough to get to drive it before it got to be taken around much. It got around to shows for awhile after they changed the color on it to blue
Re: What should the LS7 Super car be called
How about take it back down to basics a little.
Back in the day - there were no V6's (extremely basic) models to contend with.
You had your R/S, S/S, Z/28, R/S-S/S, Z/28-S/S, etc.
So - for the sake of having 15 different name plates think simple.
Base Camaro = Camaro R/S. (All of them, not two different base models, call base models are now R/S's that are worthy).
Next Level = Camaro Z/28 or SS (If there are two intermediate V8 model's, then whichever gets the upper hand.
Top Dog (LS7) = Camaro S/C (for Super Car, much like the Yenko was, but the Yenko was SYC, and never really had a badge, but certain designations from Yenko. That way, it starts it's own new trend, and it can be carried on from this point on).

. There were more than that wanting a $65,000 2002 Camaro! No it won't be a volume seller, but if Ford can sell 7,000 Shelbys a year, you KNOW Chevrolet can at least sell a couple of thousand, if not 4-5k.
