Think 'Resale'. Don't know if that's what GM will be thinking, but that's how the teens shall get 'em.

I believe that we do. Its nice and all to have a 300hp V6, but there are many people out there that simply want a V8 just to say that they own a V8 and NOT a V6. Thats where the 300-325hp LS4 is perfect for the Camaro. It allows people to own a V8 yet it doesnt scare them with the power. Plus, if they want to, they can always mod their way up to alot more power. I believe that a 300hp V6 would be stupid personally.

What would that do to Camaro's engine line-up?
I've read that direct injection technology still has some hurdles to overcome before its production ready.

Not too many, since the GXP Solstice has it and goes one sale in aug-sept time frame, this year.

Yeah, Toyota and VW also have DI engines. The Lexus IS250 and 350 have DI engines, and make a lot of power. The new BMW engines have it as well, and the 2.0T motor in the Jetta/Golf/Passat all have DI.
Ecotecs will get it, and im sure the HFV6's will start rolling out with it soon.
This brings up a good question, and one that I keep going back too. Could you up the hp with DI, compression, and still maintain low octane gas requirement?

Maybe I am confused then. Are you talking about HCCI - Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition? Essentially, similar to how a diesel works.

Here's a link for HCCI

or...If you have a 300HP V8, that we know GM has already, why waste the time and money with trying to add all of these Technologies just for the sake of doing so. I am by no means an expert but I could not see that V6 being less costly to make than the LS4 add to that the V6 would probably be a Premium fuel engine only...not a good selling point.

Re: VVT + Direct Injection + OHV 3.9L = 300hp?

Another thing to throw into the discussion is that I believe there was a G6 concept wtih a 3.9 V6 with 3 valves making 275 hp........now I think that the 3.9 in a RWD form could make 250 hp in its current form with better freeier exhaust easily......

Hmmm... hondas have alot of specific output per liter, but they really dont have any grunt!

If its 300 hp with 300 ft/lbs of torque flat as a table then cool, otherwise its just the same smoke and mirrors that has been used since James Watt dreamed up the term "horsepower"

Re: VVT + Direct Injection + OHV 3.9L = 300hp?

300 HP is stretching it. Remember that an engine's ability to produce power is limited mostly by the amount of air it can flow. A HV 3.9 with DI is not going to flow any better than the current one with port injection (unless the vertical runners usually used on this type of engine make some significant gains, which I doubt).

You do gain some efficiencies with a stratified charge (though mostly at part loads), and you can also bump the compression ratio because of better cooling of the intake charge, but that's not enough to get you to 300 HP.

Now if they added the 3-valve design to the mix, you might be getting somewhere ...

Re: VVT + Direct Injection + OHV 3.9L = 300hp?

I remember reading a GM release relating to GM's experimental OHV 3-valve V8 head ... by GM's own figures, the 3V head develops 10% more hp than equivalent 2V OHV heads while a 4V DOHC head develops around 15% more hp.

I've heard similar. They have found better/cheaper ways to get where they currently want to be.

And some of us want a V8 because it just sounds soooo much better. If I had to chose between a 275 HP V8 and a 350 HP V6 I'd choose the V8 on sound alone.

Our 270/275 HP/TQ Envoy had adequate power, even for its' weight, but it just sounded awful. It's nice that the TB/SS has more than enough power, but just as important, to me, is that driving it is an audio delight.
