Someone please shed some light on DOD
Someone please shed some light on DOD
Can we expect to be able to mod this without any problems? Can we drag/autocross w/out any problems stock? Sorry, NOBODY has talked about the DOD or potential problems.
but other than that, you wont notice a thing
Well, I wish I could give you an informed response to your question, but I just don't know.
But I will say that I'm sure there will be some sort of modification to be able to shut the DOD off completely. I know this defeats the purpose...but still, I might want to do this. Who honestly knows...but I think the option will be there. Or maybe we'll be able to option our V8s with DOD or without...but I doubt that...because that would be a lot of money to retool assembly lines and so forth...
Sorry about the scattered thought...but yeah, my main thing is that I'm sure someone in the aftermarket will offer a 'DOD' override, if it in fact impedes performance...on any level

It really depends on the mod...
Cold air intake... no problem,
Cam.. big problem
headers... no problem
exhaust.. no problem
supercharger/turbo (possible actual engine specs will depend)
ect..
DOD(AFM, MDS) whatever you want to call only goes into effect under low load, and each design is different. So depending on the design and how it works will depend on if its "mod friendly" or not.
Read up on the tech and how the engine handles itself, that will give you a better idea of what you can do and what you cant beyond whats already been stated.
PS autocrossing and draggin will have no effect on dod since it only works during low loads.

I'm just wondering b/c nobody has talked about this. I dont mine having mods w/ the DOD, I didn't know if that will affect it. I'm sure other people have thought about this as well.
Ok, first off, its not DOD anymore. Its AFM. Get the acronyms down asap or gtfo.
AFM only activates at highway speeds, under very light loads aka crusing at 55-65mph. Drag racing, autox, drifting, would NOT be one of those situations. The engine defaults to all cylinders, not to 4 so if there is a problem and the AFM system fails, it will run all 8 all the time.
How AFM works is that oil pressure is cut to the lifters, and they colapse. so that they will not open the valves. This also cuts the correct fuel injectors, and I belive thats the gist of it.
So that means you can go ***** out at the track, run a 12-13 sec pass (assuming L76 AFM 6.0 engine like in G8 GT) with all 6 liters of fury, then hit the highway and get 30mpg on 4 cyls.

THAT is an answer to the real question 1stls1 is asking If that's the case, how/why would a camshaft affect anything, really?
Under most driving conditions, the lifters would all be pumped up, and the high lift cam would be operating as intended. Under low load, so half of the lifters don't pump up ... big deal?!
(no?
)And again, as someone mentioned, if it's a big concern, then just have AFM programmed out when you get the computer tuned to match the mods done anyway (ie: heads/cam).
But please, someone enlighten me if I'm way off base here?!
