NEWS: Chevy expects over half of all Camaro ZL1 models to be automatic
Re: NEWS: Chevy expects over half of all Camaro ZL1 models to be automatic
like i stated before, ferarri and lambo autos are nothing like chevy's auto. and i think ferrarri and lambo have had their auto like this for quite a while now. its gotten much better and quicker over the years. but liek i said light years away from chevys auto. and much much more expensive. but they get great results out of their transmissions.
Re: NEWS: Chevy expects over half of all Camaro ZL1 models to be automatic
hey, i have 3 automatic cars right now. a hummer, silverado and a camry. the only car in a manual is the camaro...because it should be. i use it for accasional racing. and there is a added bennefit of racing with a manual as opposed to a traditional auto. and yes...the c7 will have a manual. they would be idiots not to have a manual. just liek they would be idiots if they didnt put an auto in the zl1. even though i dont think it should...they do it because theirs drivers who want the laziness of not shifting, and the option just makes them that much more attractive to other buyers.
But I do think the days of manual transmissions are limited. I have heard tons of people say that companies like Ferrari and Lamborghini would never abandon manaul transmissions, but here we are in 2011 and all those companies offer is auto transmissions with clutches, no torque converters. I think once GM offers a DSG type of transmission I think it will be really the beginning of the end for manual transmissions!

(The older Ferrari and Lambo units (and others) were automated sequential manuals, single clutch models where the clutch pedal was replaced by computer controlled actuators.)
Anyway, point being, the direct driver control of clutching and manual gear selection is removed in both cases, replaced by the computer, or paddles providing input to the computer.

found this thread on another site to show you some of the corvette guys thinking on a ZR1 as an auto. still havent found any true factual answer as to why it wasnt offered in an auto.

Auto quicker than a manual? And why do people keep saying that? Says who? Typically autos have been slower... In a heads up race no dial in id perfer manual which is likely faster. Most races you have to guess your time. the reason autos are so prominent in drag racing is bec
ause the advantage most autos have which is consistency is much more important. Go faster than your dial in and u loose.

Re: NEWS: Chevy expects over half of all Camaro ZL1 models to be automatic
To some extent yes, but dont most comparisons including factory put manual versions of the same car as quicker in the 1/4?
The reason for Automatics being predominant in the bracket racing (not heads up) drag racing is not speed. After you make your time runs and the 1st round starts you have to guess closest to the time you expect to run without being slower than the run you will make. You put that time on your window which becomes your "dial in." The tree is then staggered between you and the other driver as it calculates the difference in estimated speed between the two cars. Otherwise the faster car would always win and it would be boring.
The slower car goes first getting a head start by the amount of time it is slower based on the dial ins of both drivers. It is for this reason that you can not go faster than your dial in by even the slightest amount of time (running out) or you loose. This would not be fair because you did not give the other car enough of a head start to be a fair race. That is why consistency is so important in bracket racing.
Most people Ive run into in drag racing usually will repeat this as if it was off a script.
"An Auto will shift at the same point every time"
Of course that is if your transmission operates perfectly. The point remains though. The machine shifting done by an automatic transmission is usually more consistent than human shifting thus making a dial in easier to calculate. It removes human error in the shifting part of the race making the dial in a little easier to calculate.
There's nothing wrong with that. I would personally too. My point was there were 2 or 3 posts in this thread saying the Auto was quicker in the 1/4 seemingly based only on popularity of the Automatic in drag racing.
It is what you want to get out of it. I personally feel the manual is fun. Many people in drag racing pick automatic due to wanting to do everything they can to win in this case by eliminating variation rather than preference outside of winning.

Manuals are fun... however when you live in hilly terrain, they can be a PITA for a daily driver... thus my daily drivers are automatics and my "toy" is a manual.

Re: NEWS: Chevy expects over half of all Camaro ZL1 models to be automatic
Well in the case of the Caddy CTS-V who's motor is generally identical to the ZL1 the auto is quicker in the 1/4 than the manual. If GM hadn't handicapped the auto's with the L99 and instead had the LS3 the auto would most likely be quicker in that case as well. Auto Mustang GT is quicker than the stick Brembo cars with 3.73's.

The upshift algorithm in TAPshift® mode reduces delay time, allowing for aggressive tap downshifts and upshifts. The algorithm has been designed to recognize aggressive throttle movement to hold lower gears for aggressive driving
