NEWS: Chevy Camaro will be named Ke Mai Luo in China
Re: NEWS: Chevy Camaro will be named Ke Mai Luo in China
Please go look at what other cars are called in China -
Chinese and English don't mesh.
BMW -- for instance is something along the lines of Boo-Lah --
Therefore the name is the closest thing to "Camaro" in chinese......K?

Re: NEWS: Chevy Camaro will be named Ke Mai Luo in China
though, it does look like a phonetic spelling for an "Asian" accent where Ls are sounded as Rs...
what is the word on Australian/New Zeeland models?

All those who have full understanding of the Chinese sports coupe marketing and product segment, raise your hand.
I'll bet I count more crickets than hands on this one.

I bet China has a HUGE tarrif on importing a car there. For all the trade imbalance they have with the US, they have huge trade barriers if we want to ship something there.

This is very typical for cars that wish to maintain their branding in
China.
Chinese characters don't mimic ours, obviously....... So they have to
adjust to make it be as close as possible.
That's all that's happening here....Can't get there from here so to speak.....
The letter C in particular is problematic, pronunciation-wise. The Kei
sound that they use is what is done with all other Chevrolet's that have a
hard-C sound at the beginning (like Cruze, Captiva, etc.)
I'm glad this popped up as a story, actually....highlights the popularity
of the car.....without this no one outside of China would take notice that
the car is launching there. And frankly, I'd think that Camaro Enthusiasts would be thrilled that we're selling the car all over the world......moreover, with our trade imbalance (imbalance is too weak a word....) every American and Canadian should be dancing in the streets that we're exporting some manufactured goods in return....
Oh - and by the way - The BMW? Pronounced "Bee oh lah" or something along those lines - not just GM cars!

Re: NEWS: Chevy Camaro will be named Ke Mai Luo in China
I don't see them cloning cars very much, at least not to my knowledge. It would cost more to make it identical than to just sell the real deal.Plus if they wanted to, they could just make one off photos or buy a US version and use it as a template.

I am no expert, but I wouldn't think that is a concern. Popping off an iPod clone is easy for them because they make it to begin with.

I still also stand by the fact that they don't need to sell the car there to copy it.

In Heath’s New French and English Dictionary dated 1932, the word “Camaro” is defined as “Comrade, Friend, Mate, Chum, or Pal.”
