NEWS: Chevy Camaro will be named Ke Mai Luo in China

General Motors is ready to bring some muscle to the Chinese market. For the past 44 years, we've called it the Camaro. China, however, will get the bad Bowtie two-door wearing a new name. It will be called the Ke Mai Luo (���), which GM insists is a "sonorous Chinese name." We tried running Ke Mai Luo through Google Translate but wound up with nothing. Any Chinese-speaking readers feel free to enlighten us in the comments.
The CDM Camaro will get the 3.6-liter V6 engine, which is good for 312-horsepower and can be paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. No word yet if the V8 will make its way over as well. The Ke Mai Luo is going to start at approximately 500,000 Chinese Yuan, or a tidy $76,267 U.S. dollars. why in the hell would they call it that? its an american car. call it the camaro. is the badgin on the fender going to spell that or be in chineese? dumb. kinda disappointed about that.

Is this some kind of joke? The first thing I thought of was the character Charlie Chan trying to say "Camaro" it it coming out sounding like Ke Mai Luo. I'm not Asian, but if I was, I might find it offensive.

Just checked with a friend of mine of Chinese decent and she said that's exactly what it is. She thought it was funny. She also has a 5th gen SS and said she wouldn't think of driving any nice car like her Camaro in China. It's a mess.

The Ke Mei Luo will be billed as a "luxury" car commanding a price far higher than Americans typically pay.
A V6-powered Ke Mei Luo will cost about 500,000 Chinese Yuan, or roughly $76,000. Prices for a V6-powered Camaro in the U.S. typically start at about $22,000.
There has been no word, yet, on how much a V8 Powered Ke Mei Luo will cost.
The luxury performance market segment has been flourishing in China, according to GM, growing 141% in 2010.
Just as the word Camaro has no meaning in English, Ke Mei Luo means nothing in particular in Chinese, according to a GM spokesman. The automaker simply wanted to render the famous Camaro name for Chinese speakers.
