See, I'm on the other side of the fence. I don't care whether or not the mail slot is a functioning scoop. I just don't like the look of it. The shape of the front sheet metal header panel of the first generation is evident in the 5th gen, and the mail slot does nothing but disrupt that styling cue.

Poll seems to be just about 50/50. Interesting. I would've loved for it to be functional. In fact, I was hoping for it to be. Fake scoops on hoods are different though as they can enhance the look of the car. Maybe it just seems strange because it's on the nose instead of the hood? Still would've been nice if it were functional. They could've done something like the 80's TPI induction box to feed the hungry LS3.

I think that since its been there since the concept that it feels like it should be there but I wish they had gone with a functional scoop at the rear of the hood like on the 70 chevelle

GM has a rule against doing things that make sense these days.

BTW, I just think it's funny how people come up with these terms that seem to stay with certain things on the cars. The 4th's had "salad shooters" and this car has a "mail slot" LOL.

Never liked it and still don't.

I could excuse it if it were functional, but I still wouldn't like it from a design perspective.

If the only way I can get a SS is with a "mail slot" then fine. I don't care. It looks good both ways. And as has been pointed out, this is hardly the first time a Camaro has had a fake scoop. But having a functional ram air hood on my Trans Am, it would be great if the one on the SS was a ram air scoop too. I remember thinking when I first saw the concept that the forced air induction was a nice touch ala Z06. Didn't realize that it was a fake. I think that they really TRIED to make it functional, but just couldn't design it to work. Maybe in the aftermarket. I think I'll put a red LED in mine to look like KITT.

dunno really. Much perfer it be functional. Also perfer the Shark gills be functional. looks good both with and without

more important to me would be not ruining the cowl lines by cutting a hole in the front of it like bumblebee moving the scoop to the hood. I like the look of the cowl.

I'm not a fan of stuff that doesn't serve a functional purpose and makes it harder to wash the car.

excellent point. I guess you could argue the cowl isnt functional pulling air in from the back or the shark gills. I guess the difference to me is I never cared is the cowl pulled cold air in from the back like the origional Z28. I just loved the look. I like the shark gills too even if they arent functional...

The Z06 scoop, not so much. I perfer any scoops to be functional. Rather have it solid. Guess its personal taste.
