Then when the chassis lab brings it to you at an inexpensive 3600 lbs and the powertrain guys bring you an inexpensive 30mpg you congratulate both groups and let the marketing guys add 200 lbs worth of BS.

Everybody wins.

Except Ford.
If only it were that easy.

I can only imagine

In other words, don't hold your breath.
exactly, the key to the success of any car nowadays is SELLING VOLUME.

The engineers im sure are trying to cut weight and pull rabbits out of thier hats, but at the same time, they have to keep the car at a balance between what the enthusiasts love and what will win the market share.

GM is going to have to build a camaro that not only looks good, runs good and is reliable, but also that has the creature comforts expected in todays cars...and 90% of the time, these comforts = weight. Now whether or not they will choose to offer a "stripper" package, where you can achieve this engine in a box mentality is completley up to one thing...cost.

But overall i think we will end up with a quality, fairly light weight, good car, that will win over the whole of us.

Correct, however even a stripped V8 coupe was almost 3100 lbs. Furthermore, the 3rd gens were less than 100 lbs heavier on average.
