New GM Motive and gear whine?

I blew my gears and had new ones put in and after running around for a while it still whines. It really isnt loud at part throttle, but let off and you can hear them. You can barely hear them with the radio on. All the bearings where replaced and the gears where new. The guy said that they tried, but couldnt get them to stop whining, so he just went ahead and set them up a little tighter then norm. I thought he didnt know what he is doing, but my buddy has the same problem in his Stang after his gear change, though not as loud. So, are they setup wrong, or is this normal?

Thanks
Jeremy

Mym motive 4.10's have a little whine too. They are not supposed to whine if setup perfectly, but it is hard to get the psttern perfect on the small contact area the 4.10's give you on the 10 bolt. We set mine up close to perfect and they whine like you mentioned, good luck!

Mine are 3.73s, so I dont know how much of difference there is. Setting up gears are one thing I will not do bcuz I dont trust myself enough and have never done it before.

I had a set of Richmond 3.73's in my car earlier this year and they whined like crazy!? I mean, they were bad! My dad is a mechanic, so he installed them, and after ripping the rear end apart to check all the measurements again, just to find that they were perfect, we even took the car to a driveline shop who specializes in trannies, gears, etc. They double checked our measurements and ran a pattern on the gears and said everything was A - O.K. Basically, what the guy there told us is that every now and then there are sets of gears that just DON'T run quiet. Maybe a couple sets out of 100 will be bad, so I had them re-install my factory 2.73's, and I got a credit from Richmond and bought a cat-back exhaust!!

A buddy of mine (who is also a board member: "LT1 PWRD") had Richmond 3.73's installed in his car at the same time as mine. His gears actually whine slightly as well, but not nearly as bad as the set I had.

Chances are you've just got a set of whiney gears? I doubt that there's anything you could do to make them quiet except replace them, or leave the radio turned up.

I read somewhere, that "harder the gear, the more noise its going to produce." I don't know how true it is, but my Richmond's whine also..but it was also setup twice...so I don't know what to tell ya.

My Motive 3.73's run perfectly quiet except for some slight chatter when comming off the throttle at higher speeds.
My mechanic set the backlash at 8 thousanths of an inch.
My Motive 3.42's whined a bit on deceleration but it turned out the previous mechanic had set them up too loose.
I also had Strange 2 series 3.42's and they were noisy.
I wouldn't go with anything but GM or Motives if you want them to be quiet.
Other brands are almost always noisy but maybe stronger.

Everyone that says their new gears are quiet. Do you guys run it on the track? On Slicks/ET Street/Nittos? My Motive gears were silent until I made 1 hit on my ET streets. The rears in these cars are just to week..

LOL....My Motive 4.10 gears are semi-quiet. They make a little more noise now than they did when they were installed CORRECTLY 3 years ago.
Do I run it at the track? These gears probably have 200 passes on them...Over half of them being on ET Streets. Wheels up, 1.67 60 ft. times, and 12.25 in the quarter.
Too many people cut these rears way too short because they have people put the gears in incorrectly. A rear is just like anything else automotive...If you assemble it wrong, your going to have problems. What is the most common breakage on a 10 bolt?...They chip teeth off the ring gears. That's caused because the backlash isn't set correctly.

My motives 4.11's are dead silent until the car gets over 1mph.

Then they whine like crazy on deaccel.

Oh well, they pull great.

He He I like that!

Mine Motive 4.10's were set up by myself and I was about .005 too deep in my pinion shim setup. Then I had a pro do it and it still whines, just not as much.

Some just whine and it will not hurt them. My suggestion: make a good excuse to use sound deadener in your car.

Here's a bulletin about Motive gears having to be set up differently because of the cut of the gears. Maybe the shop that set them up doesn't know about it.

Woah on this one!

I talked directly to Motive Gear and they indicated they are 5 cut not 2 cut so I believe this only applies to GM supplied gears. I brought this referenced website up specifically. To me it is not black and white since I asked if they supply to GM and he said NO.
