Like the sub says "How can I tell if I have a 8.2 or 8.5 rearend?"
I have a 70 Camaro I've been working on and I know 70's came with both. Is there a visual check I can do to find out wothout tearing it apart?

You can assume:
1970 10 bolt will be an 8.2 They didn't make the 8.5" until 1971.
The alternative is the 1970 12 bolt rear end which was used in high torque cars.

Or you can measure and confirm:
the 8.2" rear end uses u-joints that around ~ 1 1/16". The 8.5 & 12 bolt both have ~1 3/8" diameter u-joints.

In 1971 the 10 bolt was strong enough it negated the need to use 2 different rear ends in the Camaro.

I assumed: My 1973 Z28 has a 12 bolt in it - and a 8.2" yoke. No wonder it broke all to #eLL when the clutch was dropped.

So don't assume anything.

In my experience(this may not be in all occasions) The 8.5 10 bolt will have two squared off lugs on the bottom of the pumpkin. The 8.2 will be rounded.

Hope that helps.
