Re: Engine Identification
The LT1 partial VIN is on the back of the engine, driver side, above the oil filter. Shoebox has a photo.

This will tell you the model year of the vehicle the engine was originally installed in, and whether that vehicle was a Chevrolet or a Pontiac. Note that "Chevrolet" could be either a Camaro or an Impala SS.

Re: Engine Identification
The make and year are decoded in the link Fred gave you. The numbers after the R are the plant (first 2 would be St. Therese for an f-body) and the next numbers are the sequential build numbers from the assembly line.

Re: Engine Identification
Since there are two different sources of info, what EXACTLY are you looking for?
Rob's link tells you its from a 94 Z28.... and all 1994 F-Body LT1 engines are the same, except for the minor, external emissions variations, reflected by a 3 letter code . Doesn't matter if it came from a Camaro or a Firebird. If you want to know the source of the engine, which is typically Flint, and the date it was assembled, and verify the original emissions provisions, you need to find a way to access the number stanped on the front of the block, as mentioned above.
Not quite sure what 94 Camaro LT1 my transplant came from.

Re: Engine Identification
"Ron Thomas" signed back in 6 hours after his post above, and never came back again. Guess he was unhappy because no one responded in 6 hours. Given the small number of active members on this site, this was an unreasonable expectation.

Re: Engine Identification
Yep. 6 hours is not enough time for this old fart,me, to respond responsibly. Kids should know that by observing their grandparents. Too bad, they are on their phones too long all the time to bother. Rant over.
