idle problem?
any ideas on what the problem can be? My camaro runs strong while im giving it gas, but when its idling the rpms go up and down almost like its gonna die (never actually does tho) at night i can actually see the lights go bright to dim as the rpms go up and down. Occassionaly the car does die when i put it in reverse and dont give it gas. any ides? its a 96 z28 automatic trans

Re: idle problem?
The computer (PCM) uses the idle air control valve (IAC) to control the idle speed. Could be a problem with the valve, or you may have a vacuum leak that has caused the PCM to close the valve down, and it can no longer control the idle.

Re: idle problem?
My 93 Z does the same thing. No check engine light but I did hook it up to a scanner and everything seems to be operating smoothly. Mine really only does it after about 15 minutes of idling. I have never had it shut off either. maybe it has something to do with the JET chip which I have also. Z28pete may be on to something here. Im going to leave mine alone for right now as it doesn't bother me that much. Good luck with that though hope you figure it out.
