'94 Z28 trouble starting...

So I bought my Z28 no more than 2 weeks ago.

Alternator was only putting out about ~13volts and it was on its way out so I replaced it with an A/C Delco 140amp alternator. Now it's at a healty +14volts and not to mention it's got a new serpentine belt.

Suspected the battery died at one point since it wasn't holding a charge well so I replaced that today.

I also disconnected wires from/to alternator/body/etc. and cleaned all contacts so I've got good grounds/connections all around.

Car sometimes has trouble starting up. It happened earlier today after getting out of class after the car sat for +4hours. After getting home and going out again it started just fine.

Sometimes it has trouble starting as if the battery's weak. Should I assume it's the starter at this point?

What does it do when you try to start it?

When my starter was going (battery had just been replaced) I was having hard starts like it would crank over really slowly but eventually start. Then one day I went to start it and just got a loud 'CLICK'

What you described....cranking slowly but it starts soon afterward. No click (yet) and nothing else.

I ask because when I had an L83 corvette and my starter went out, prior to it going out it made a screech-like noise. Was expecting something similar here if it was indeed my starter.

Anyway, guess that's next on my need-to-buy-list. As soon as I take care of this always-on-radiator fan.

Did you clean the wire contact points on the starter? Did you check the battery cables for corrosion or damage?

Yes sir, covered that in my first post

I'm going to replace the starter very soon so consider this thread over with lol.

Guess I just needed someone to confirm my suspicions.

If you do end up replacing the starter consider getting the LT4 starter... it's apparently lighter and more compact than the LT1 starter and lasts longer, has more starting torque, and is a direct bolt-in replacement. I wish I had known that when I replaced mine

Wow thanks for the headsup!

Good thing I didn't order a replacement yet.
