You dont need a press for the carrier bearings, mainly just the inner pinion bearing.

The toughest part is holding the pinion yoke in place so you can crank the pinion nut and crush the sleeve to get the correct bearing preload. It takes some serious torque to crush the sleeve. Just take your time and be careful.
a tip about the yoke, put a ratchet or hammer handle between the yoke and the torque arm, then the yoke will not turn

Well, I have a real opinion about this one. Some say "its not that hard" well, they are correct, its really not. What is hard is getting it RIGHT!

As for a shop to do it, go to a 4 wheeler place. They do axles all the time.

The point is, there is a press involved at some point. If you don't have one, it is not a totally DIY job.

Re: Gear install... do it myself? hints? tips?

Just diggin up a thread.. I was looking for opinions on the solid pinion spacer and decided to go with the crush collar.. I just finished my gear install about 3 hours ago.. it took me about 6 hours or so to do.. I figured I would dig this thread up and add to it.. this was easier than a cam install. I used the factory shims and the pattern on the ring gear turned out just as the richmond video shows. I havent driven it yet but I will shortly.. as soon as I get cleaned up.. I broke my 4.10s by the way, that being the reason I went with new gears.. I put 3.73s in too. didnt like the 4.10s much. they just kill yoru top end.. I wouldnt recommend 4.10s to anyone unless they race strictly from a stop till the 1/4 mark.. other wise they arent that great.. then again if your making alot of power and dont really care then thats great too..

Damn.. I thought this thread looked familiar.

For anyone wondering what I ended up doing, I just had a local shop do it for me. They've been in my car for almost a year and have held up to probably 60-75 launches at the track and over 10k miles.

Those Strange gears are a decent kick.

Country when are we gonna see you out at the track. I'll be there tonight.
