Is the stock Bose head unit worth upgrading and other questions?

Well I just recieved my Z and was thinking about switching the stereo equipment from my 77 into it. The '95 is equipped with the Bose system. I was really suprsied with the soudn quality and will probably leave the speakers alone.

While its on my mind, what size sub is in the back of my Z? I looked at it and it looked small. Its pretty crisp and thumps pretty hard though.

Anyways the main question was this. In my 77 I have a pioneer head unit. I cant forget the letters, but the model is the "6400" If you dont know what I'm talking about its the one with the dolphin/race car and other animations built in. It also has CD Text, is XM radio ready and other features. When I installed it in my '77 I noticed a nice increase in quality over the 8 year old Alpine that was previously in it. Will puttnig this Pioneer in my '95 Z28 make any difference in sound quality? Would it be worth the swap? If not, I'll probably end up selling it. Also, what size and how many speakers come with the Bose system?

Sorry I'm so ignorant towards my car stereo. I dont have any manuals or anythign that might have come with the car brand new.

Thanks.

The back sub is a 6.5" speaker in a specially designed enclosure. You probably have the five speaker bose system. It's either three or five. If it's the three there won't be any speakers in the back right behind the front seats.

I would highly recommend buying a bose adapter(from circuit city or best buy or EE) that will lower the level of the signal from your headunit to your amp. If you don't buy this you will essentially be double amping your speakers. The bose system sounds pretty good for stock but is not reliable. I would do anything I can(bose adapter) to be easy on the stock stuff. You'll need a dash kit, antenna adapter, and bose adapter(sometimes called "premium sound" adapter).

Be ready to replace all the speakers and rewire the system if your bose system goes out. Mine took a crap on me after I put my alpine head unit in and I re did the whole stereo. Be prepared to run wires into the doors and to the rear speakers(you'll lose the sub). This way you run speaker wire from your Pioneer headunit directly to some aftermarket speakers instead of aftermarket radio to the bose amps then to the bose speakers.

By the way the model # is DEH-P6400

You will notice an increase in the SQ for sure. Is your sub in the trunk area? If it is, it's not stock. You more than likely have the Bose 10 speaker system. Mids and tweeters in doors, mids in sail panels, mids and tweeters in hatch area.

For that year it's co-ax in the doors and sub in the back for 3 speaker...... and co-ax in the doors and sail panels and sub in the back for five speaker. GM added some extra speakers a few years later

Edit: it's not really accurate to call them coaxials... we'll just say full range speakers.
