What Gears?

I have a 95 T/A a4, I'm trying to find out what gears I have. The rear end is stock. Does anyone know what gears they came with?

Also, someone was telling me the 6spd LT1 F-bodies came with a different gear ratio, and that its quite common to swap them into the A4 cars. Any info on that would be great.

6spd cars from 94 up all had 3.42's, the autos have either a 2.73's or 3.23's. You can look on the bottom inside of you glove box and look at the RPO codes. If you see GU2 then you have 2.73's, and GU5 is 3.23's.

GU2 Axle, Rear 2.73 Ratio
GU4 Axle, Rear 3.08 Ratio
GU5 Axle, Rear 3.23 Ratio
GU6 Axle, Rear 3.42 Ratio

Cool, thanks! It says GU5. Is it fairly easy to change over to the 3.42 gears?

IMO not worth the change to 3.42 if you already have 3.23's. I swapped a complete M6 rear into my car but I had 2.73's. Depends on your situation. Just doing gears 3.73, good deal on a complete rear and needs replacement 3.42's OK.........

Anyone know what I can expect to spend on a set of 3.73s?

I switched from 3.23 to 3.42 ratio in my daily driven 93Z with an A4..... It's easier on gas mileage... If the vehicle has a M6, I would suggest 3.73 for a DD...

If the vehicle is a weekend warrior, then go with 3.73s' with an A4....JMO :)

As far as price, $150~200 for gears.... It cost me, around $450 for gears and installation...

REALLY?! The shop that I was going to use quoted me 5.4hrs labour time, plus about $800 for the gears. All said and done it would be over $1500 to swap them out.

Is there anywhere online I can order a set of 3.73s? (Sorry for all the dumb questions, I'm new to this!...and quite sick of running such slow times at the track!)

Oh, and the car is my semi-daily driver. It gets driven on the sunny days! I've got an 86 Fiero to take the grunt of the bad days. I'm not too worried about gas mileage, the thing is already a pig as it is.

Ok, just checked out Thunder Racing's site... got another dumb question.. if I take one of these sets: http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog/?action=vshop&vid=4&pcid=67 to a shop, are they a direct swap?

Just make sure you buy the right one...you need gears for a "series 3 carrier" if you have 3.23s right now.

But when you do get the right gears...that's all the parts you need (and fluid). But since you're back there...might want to add an aluminum rear end cover.

As for that quote..that's insane. In the Bay Area, CA, I had my gears installed for $550 parts and labor. So if you bring the gears...probably cost $400 in labor. They did it in like 20 minutes too...the shop specializes in rearends, differential, etc.

So definitely shop around..$1500 is too much.
