what if the rear or transmission can't take all that abuse?
i have a friend with the A6 transmission in his C6 that took a crap on him on his cam only vette, i'm sure the added weight in the camaro will not help.

easy, then you build it stronger!,, i had no problem building the 4l60e and rear end in my 94 camaro to go 10's, and the new camaro trans / drivetrain will be a better starting point than the drivetrain in the 94 camaro
jay_lt4 08-28-2008, 12:55 PM a couple parts showed up today for the new camaro Stroker LS3 build:

i was still getting almost 20mpg hwy with the 383 lt4 engine, and my s-10 with a carb still got upper teens for mileage.
its all in the tune,

Need4Camaro 09-19-2008, 09:28 PM lol - Never saw a case of modding a Pre-Production car, this is a first for me but I'm definately interested...
Funny enough, 400 HP stock is more than enough for me. I'm just going to do breather mods, Intake / Exhaust...

lucky! i wish i were mechanically inclined to be able to build my own motors!
Buy some books and keep reading the tech forums and you'll find that it's easier than you think when you are well informed and have the slightest bit of mechanical knowledge.
jay_lt4 12-27-2008, 09:27 PM engine is done for the most part, just waiting for gm to get the camaro in the parts catalog so i can get the correct oil pan and pick-up tube, and i need to order my stall converter yet.

jay_lt4 01-07-2009, 01:02 PM what kind of number do you think your going to be getting out of that?
over 550hp at the crank, i have talked to a couple vette guys with 415/416ci strokers like mine and they make around 500hp to the wheels behind a manual trans
2010_5thgen 01-07-2009, 01:17 PM so its a 415ci 6.8l? why not just build a 7.0 427 up? it sounds like the motor you built will be pretty bullet proof but why did you choose that motor? plan on doing a blower to it?
jay_lt4 01-07-2009, 01:27 PM so its a 415ci 6.8l? why not just build a 7.0 427 up? it sounds like the motor you built will be pretty bullet proof but why did you choose that motor? plan on doing a blower to it?
its a proven combo with no exotic parts, should be very reliable, i could have went with a 4.1" stroke crank and got a few more cubes but then any power adder would not be recomended because the piston gets a little thin on top,, so i went with a 4" stroke and a good forged piston so i can spray it at the track
also my s-10 went 10.50's in the 1/4 with just a junkyard 6.0L and unported L92 heads and a small shot, so this engine will be way better than the 6.0L i had,, should be fun, even though the camaro will be about 700# heavier than the s-10 was
2010_5thgen 01-08-2009, 08:21 AM pretty cool. id like to just drop in the 7.0 crate motor if i had the place to do it.
My Red 93Z-28 01-08-2009, 08:25 AM pretty cool. id like to just drop in the 7.0 crate motor if i had the place to do it.
You would need quite a bit of money to even purchase the LS7 crate motor as well, if I remember correctly. You can get the same power for less by doing something similar to the OP
2010_5thgen 01-08-2009, 01:50 PM i know the crate motors cost about 17,000. but .....the ls3 in gm performance catalog sells for 15,000. so if you were to buy a crate motor, you could probably sell the ls3 on ebay for some where around 10-12k if it were imediately taken out before driving the car too much. i dont think im going to do it, but i would love to. ill probably just throw a pro charger on.
JakeRobb 01-08-2009, 01:52 PM have it ready to drop in when my L99 auto camaro comes in.
What are your plans for the L99?

or you could build a stroker LS3 for $7000 and have way more power than the crate LS3 engine
jay_lt4 01-08-2009, 02:03 PM What are your plans for the L99?
probly keep it around for a while,, not sure

The LS376/480 (basically a cammed LS3 with 480hp) crate motor sells for about $7900.

ya and its only 480 hp 376ci and stock heads, my stroker LS3 is 415ci and has cnc ported heads, forged pistons, forged crank, forged h-beam rods and a better cam than the crate engine and will be way more than 480HP and i have $7000 total in it right now and its ready to bolt in!

sorry i was looking at the wrong engine. its about 9k for the ls3.
here was were i found that it cost 17k. it must be a misprint(type) .....http://www.gmperformanceparts.com/sema/camaro/camaro_sitelet.html
click on the dale jr camaro and then select the engine and it shows the price.
thats where i saw the 17k price.
thats pretty cool how you can just click on the parts on the car and it shows the price.
2010_5thgen 01-08-2009, 03:30 PM or you could build a stroker LS3 for $7000 and have way more power than the crate LS3 engine
or for that 7 grand i can put a supercharger on and have about 550+ in less than a days work.:D
GoFast908Z 01-11-2009, 12:59 PM or for that 7 grand i can put a supercharger on and have about 550+ in less than a days work.:D
yeah, and then you're done. with the 4.0 stroke, he can add a power adder and make a LOT more power. Besides, a supercharged stocker is not as cool as a big bad nasty stroker.
jay_lt4 01-11-2009, 01:51 PM gofast908z very nice engine, do you have any numbers , dyno or track??
i thought about going with the 4.1" crank but im probly going to spray this engine so the 4.0" crank was a better choice for this combo.

Thanks man.
it did 487/444 through the stall and on a 111 degree day, so you can imagine the power loss with that heat. I've made some changes and it will be back on the dyno for a complete retune, it should do 530+rwhp.
When its time for a rebuild, i'm probably gonna go with a 4.0" crank to take it down to a 418 and slap a Procharger on it with 8-10 psi.
2010_5thgen 01-12-2009, 08:11 AM yeah, and then you're done. with the 4.0 stroke, he can add a power adder and make a LOT more power. Besides, a supercharged stocker is not as cool as a big bad nasty stroker.
not necesarily done. i can still do new heads, cam, intake, throttle body......etc. and the list goes on.
may not be as big and bad but it get the job done. and he said he was only goign to be running about 500+ hp. i can get that from the blower and some(550+) cheaper and easier to install. then do some tunning, power chips, headers, exhaust, lighten the load a little. and still quicker than it takes to build a motor.
John_H 01-12-2009, 09:48 AM Did you consider the LSX for a build instead? I believe GMPP is going to have a crate LSX 454 with 660 hp. I know on their site its listed at 620, but I swear I've read 640 and 660 from other GM sources. Anyway, I bet if you wanted to build a killer street engine for drag racing, $18k build-up in a LSX would make an insane engine. I think a power-adder gives something like a 45% boost in power. That would mean a 900+ hp street capable motor. Does that sound about right?
jay_lt4 01-12-2009, 11:49 AM engine is built and ready to drop in, also long tube headers and x-pipe from a major header company that is using my car for their header test fitment. also this engine will make 550+ hp, most of the vette guys with a manual trans and a 415/416ci engine combo simular to mine make around 500hp to the wheels!
add to that 100-150 shot of spray and it should run some very good times at the track
ws6 beat 01-18-2009, 04:35 PM can u post a parts list?

more oil pressure
JakeRobb 01-18-2009, 09:48 PM thats where i saw the 17k price.
Weird; yeah, if you Google for that part number, it's less than seven grand from several places.
or for that 7 grand i can put a supercharger on and have about 550+ in less than a days work.:D
Unless you're a professional car builder, I'd say good luck getting a complete supercharger installed in less than a day.
I'd say one VERY long day at the very least.
waiting on gm to get the camaro in the parts catalog so i can order the correct camaro oil pan and pickup
Why not just take them off your Camaro when it arrives?
jay_lt4 01-18-2009, 11:56 PM Why not just take them off your Camaro when it arrives?
id rather leave the engine complete for the most part,
JakeRobb 01-19-2009, 12:05 PM id rather leave the engine complete for the most part,
So order some other pan/pickup and swap them.
I guess it all depends on which happens first -- you get the car, or the parts you need show up in the catalog.
GoFast908Z 01-20-2009, 07:46 PM Jay, here are my numbers for ya...
Car made 491 rwhp and 459 rwtq.
Uncorrected numbers were 507/474
We seem to have hit the power limit of the stock MAF and lid. This time around on the dyno I did have my cats back on. I'm really looking forward to the TSP 100mm lid and MAF, as well as the FAST 102mm TB and intake. Some real good power to be found in the intake.
jay_lt4 01-20-2009, 09:04 PM nice numbers
jay_lt4 01-21-2009, 12:16 PM just checked with the parts dept, the 2010 camaro is in the gm parts catalog, dont know how long its been up, so i ordered a pan and pickup tube
and guess what, its all the same part numbers as the 2009 pontiac g8 gt
i also ordered a BRPhotrods oil pickup tube girdle:

steven.collins 07-13-2009, 04:33 PM Odd how most of this is a mute point now. I am going to drop in a Millenial Falcon Hyperdrive. 4-5k jules of HP. All kidding aside, not sure I'd want to burn my warranty until the bugs are worked out of the car and the jury is out on what mods make sense.

what, a LS3 stroker engine doesnt make sense to you?
GoFast908Z 07-13-2009, 04:39 PM seems to me there are no bugs in this car....
jay_lt4 07-13-2009, 04:52 PM there are leaders and there are followers,,
steven.collins 08-02-2009, 03:47 PM Don't get me wrong, 418cid sounds awesome and I understand what you're saying about leading vs following, I did it with my Blu Ray Player! Stakes are just a hair higher with the car.
I believe that set up offers the Compstar or Eagle 4" crankshafts. Either way, modding violates warranties. Not sure if a single 2010 has over 20k miles on it yet. I know they did their homework at GM on our cars but maybe you're right. I'm too conservative! Although the only bug I did see was that with the positive cable issue causing the car to die....
BTW, did you notice better performance, or SERIOUS better performance? Just curious.
jay_lt4 08-02-2009, 05:08 PM BTW, did you notice better performance, or SERIOUS better performance? Just curious.
SERIOUS better performance
remaxracer45 09-12-2009, 11:42 PM I have the last car Jay built and I have to say yes he's crazy and must have more money than me but I own what he did with old technology and its a BADD ASS car. He's a smart guy and i'm sure a GM Mechanic will find a way to get warranty work done! PS Jay i'd like to see when you run it at KK. I think i'm going on October 2nd.

how did you prelube the engine? is there a J tool from kent moore for that now?
jay_lt4 10-09-2009, 10:46 AM how did you prelube the engine? is there a J tool from kent moore for that now?
yes, it is a large plastic jug with a hand pump and a hose, and a box of different fittings for all the different engines
this tool worked great, all the oil passages were pre filled with oil at start-up, i even rotated the engine by hand while pressurizing it to pump up the lifters, i had oil at all of my rocker arms, no delay getting oil pressure when i fired up the engine
i cut apart the first oil filter after 30min run time and no metal at all, same with the second filter 200 miles later
jay_lt4 10-09-2009, 10:48 AM just to update everyone, i got the car to the track a few weeks ago, i only got 2 runs in before it got rained out, i ran 11.9 both runs without even really getting the tires heated up good or doing any tuning
IrocSS85 10-10-2009, 09:21 AM great baseline. how were the 60's?
jay_lt4 10-10-2009, 10:54 AM great baseline. how were the 60's?
first run 1.8 60'
second run 1.7 60', but i forgot to turn off the stabilitrac so at about 100' it kicked in and tried to straighten the car out, still ran 11.9, would have been a better run if it didnt kick in. then we got rained out.
car will be going in storage for the winter soon, but i have a few more mods to pick up over the winter
-fast lsxr 102mm intake(maybe the nick williams 102mm electric t/b)
-kooks 3" header back system
-GEARS(hopefully someone has a ring and pinion by spring time) otherwise im going to buy a complete diff from a manual trans car and get just a little improvement in the rear gear,
4000 miles on the car and no issues at all with the engine swap, been driving it almost every day to work, im really going to miss it over the winter, what a great car
IrocSS85 10-10-2009, 10:03 PM wow sounds great. what do you think is holding you back in teh 60 so far though? traction? with that kinda power, and a decent 3200 stall could be getting into the low 1.6's Id think. better with a more aggressive stall ofcourse. but thats only if you can get traction. Im really curious how strong these rear ends are and if/what can be done to make them hook.
jay_lt4 10-11-2009, 08:06 AM you have to remember this car with driver is over 4150# with a 28.8" tire and only 3.27 gears
i only got to make 2 runs and already had the 60' time down to a 1.7 with 28 psi of air in the tires and not much of a burn out, next run i was going to take more air out and heat the tires more
IrocSS85 10-11-2009, 09:54 PM 28.8" tire? what made you put that large of a tire on there? yeah thats killing the 60's for sure with the stock gear. and yeah, I wasnt thinking of how heavy those cars. forgot about that.
