changeing a bad fuel pump

Is it a hard job to change a fuel pump yourself?

The hardest part is pulling the tank, easier to cut an access panel to get to it - neither way is easy.

Re: changeing a bad fuel pump

do a search on this board and there are some good pics on where too cut a panel in the back DO IT THAT WAY dont mess with dropping the tank.. ive changed two pumps the first time i had the car down anyways so i dropped the tank and put in a stock replacement and swore again i would never do that again about 3 months later i went too a supercharger and had too upgrade the pump so i cut and access hole in the rear and it took me like an hour and a half and was a piece of cake next time around it will take me about 20min just make sure you do some research so you dont botch up your trunk pan and use like a dremal or somthing of that nature so you get a clean cut so you can reuse the panel or atleast thats the way i did it and worked awsome

Cut an access panel, it's a lot easier. Make sure you don't go too deep. I don't know if there is a template or anything out there of exactly where to cut, but that would be helpful.

Re: changeing a bad fuel pump

if you pull the carpet its very obvious on where too cut you cut from just behing where it curves down in the front too where the groove starts in the back and about a half in. on the inside of each groove on the sides.. if you go look you would see what i was talking about.. just look for pics on this site thats what i did and found exactly what i needed and i used a dremal with good cutting wheels and it took me like 30min and with some patence it wont take very many wheels Good luck

Re: changeing a bad fuel pump

Well i called around to some places for a quote on how much it will cost them for this job and i found one that costs $795.00 its alot better than $1,400. My dad and me are in the process of building a patio, both have a job were we only have time to work on the pation over the weekends. So trying to do this will just be stressfull. No time to work on the car so it will probley end up getting done when school starts and i need the car as soon as possible. Its summer and thats when you want to drive your camaro. Thanks for the help.

Ouch, cut a hole in the floor and save your money, please.

Re: changeing a bad fuel pump

The quoted prices are absolutely insane. Do you realize performance shops will do a complete engine and clutch swap for a grand, let alone a pathetic fuel pump swap....get real!!

Anyway, yes search "trap door", do it on google as well because the best write up I have ever seen (from my memory) was found on the internet, not on this message board...I'll try and find it in the meantime.

Further more, this can be done in literally a couple hours, with 95% of the time being dedicated to cutting the trap door. Exactly as someone pointed out, make sure your cutting disc or dremel, etc doesnt go too deep, however I wouldn't sweat it if you knick the actual gas tank. Youll know how deep to go just from the feel of it.

Another valueable tip: make sure your trap door extends a little beyond the curved part of the trunk area. (in other words closest to the back seat). The more you cut the more room you have to bring the lines and pump up and out.

Lastly, get a piece of sheet metal and tap some holes and seal off the hole. This will keep any stray fumes, etc sealed out from the cabin area.

The actual pump swap itself is mindless. Simply look at the stock setup and play around till you get it. Not very hard at all - took about 15 mins to swap out the pump alone.

Re: changeing a bad fuel pump

There's really a lot of posts about changing out the fuel pump on the "General F-Body Tech & Info" forum. The posts are there because they don't really belong here on "LT1/LT4 Engine Tech". A search on that forum shuold give you all the info you need.

I'll move your post there, and make a note here that you have (we assume) and LT1, since that's where you posted the questions. You might want to add a "signature" with basic info about your car - year, model, tranny, engine, any major mods, etc. That way people will be able to give you more accurate answers.
