I have a '93 Z28 M6 w/153K miles.

The transmission whines when trying to shift into 3rd gear. Clutch hydralics are fine. The transmission shop says its a bearing going bad. The whine gets louder and higher pitched with RPM. Whines a little in other gears too, but goes away 5 seconds or so after shifting.

The gave me two options:
1. Drive it into the ground.
2. Have a dealer put a new one in($2800) or rebuild it. ( < $2800)

What would the best course to act on?

 

could be the pilot bearing/bushing...both are easy to replace...but if you're at 153k miles i might look into a rebuild anyway...you can rebuild it yourself for a couple hundred bucks or have a shop rebuild it(approx. $850 with all upgrades if you pull the trans yourself and put it back in yourself) or have a speed shop do the rebuild and install which should run around $1500

i pulled my transmission out twice in the past two months with nothing but a jack, jackstands, torque wrench, and a socket set so it can be done and its not difficult at all

i wouldnt put in a new one at all...too damn expensive
