Can someone tell me what these wires could be?

Hello,

Well tonight on the way home I ran out of gas. My gas hand doesn't work after installation of the Walbro fuel pump. I thought I was getting at least 15 miles to the gallon, Well I'm only getting 10 mpg. The Odometer had 153 miles when the car died. 10 X 15 gallon tank = 150 miles
Anyway, I noticed some wires hanging down just beside the rear of the transmission on the driver side of the car that seemed to have been burned completely off at the ends. There were 4 wires (2 black, 1 tan and I think a white wire). Two of these wires split off and goes to a sensor or some sort of electrical connection just at the rear of the transmission on the driver side of the car. Since they are fried...can I cut them or are they important. Whatever they are it don't seem to affect the car's performance.
I looked on Shoebox's website and could not locate a picture of the wires.

Thanks,

Tim

There are two electrical devices at the rear of the tranny - the VSS sensor (does your speedo work?) and the reverse lockout solenoid (is it hard to get your shifter into reverse?). Can you tell from this photo which one the two wires are still connected to?

Your post is sort of unclear.... do you have 4 wires just dangling back there, with only two of them connected to the unknown elctrical device?

Your a life saver man....
Two of the wires go the speed sesor. They are all tied up with the 4 wires that I mentioned. Its hard to explain. All of the wires are bundled together, it appears that a white and black wire comes out of the bundle and goes to the speed sensor connection....then the other wires should go somewhere else, but they have been burned at the ends. They are just dangling down.
I haven't had time to trace the wires to the original source because it was night when I got in and I'm making this post a 6:04AM.
That picture is right on the money.

Oh Yea, I do have a hard time putting the car in Reverse...this started about 2 weeks ago. I made a post on the board about this too.

Thanks alot.

If you lose power to the reverse lockout solenoid, you realy need to lean on the lever to get it to move over far enough to the right to get it into the reverse gate.

Its also possible someone pulled the harness connector off the skip shift solenoid to defeat it. That would require that they add a resistor to the harness, or purchase a "skip shift eliminator" to plug into the harness. That's the only way to avoid an SES ligh for the skip shift in a 96/97.
