I'm having problems troubleshooting mine and I want to make sure I have this right:
On a cold start, the AIR Pump pushes warm air through the cats, thus heating them up faster and preserving their lives. More specifically, it pulls air from the air intake, pushes it to the air shutoff valve (or whatever that EGR looking thing is at the back of the engine), which divides the air between the driver and passenger sides of the engine.
I'm getting a "secondary air injection malfunction" (P0410) but the air pump is working properly. Everything seems to be working!
What am I missing?! Help!

AIR has nothing to do with the EGR.
What the AIR system does is provide extra air (not warm air) to the cats when the engine is cold and running a rich mixture. This helps get the cats warmed up faster to aid in reducing emissions.

Yea, I know the difference between AIR and EGR. BUT, there is a disc on the driver's rear side of the engine that has a resemblance to an EGR valve. It's called the air shutoff valve, I believe. And it's part of the AIR system.

That thing at the back of the intake manifold is a EGR valve. It has nothing to do with the AIR system. The air pump housing has a solonoid/shutoff valve built into it, and the air gets pumped directly from the pump output to the exhaust manifolds.

I'm not very familiar with the LS1 stuff.
[edit] I do see the shutoff valve (added in 2000) in the part book diagram, but I can't tell you how to troubleshoot the LS1 system.
