New TA owner, already a problem :(

Hi everyone. I recently purchased a mint (I thought ) 95 Trans Am a4 with 51k. Everything was going fine until I noticed a pool of water on my passenger side floor. I tracked it down and the leak is definately coming from the ac evaporator. The drain hole on the bottom is clear and damp, so I know some of it is actually getting out of the car. I noticed the leak from the bottom of the box in the passenger compartment. Apparently, there is a seam in the box that was originally sealed with a rubber compound that has just worn out. I tried sealing it with some silicon cement but it just won't hold. Anyone else have this problem? I'd appreciate any help.

the drain is probably clogged. Take a wire hanger and clean it out.

Yeah, that's the first thing I checked. It's all clear.

is it water or is it coolant? does it have a sweet smell? if it is coolant, your heater core most likely got a leak in it. some cars drain it outside the car through a weep hole, others drain it right onto the passenger floor. im not sure where it goes on the fbodies though.

right on the passenger side floor on fbodies. I've had to replace them on every fbody I've owned, and its a royal PITA.

It's definately water.

Get used to having problems. I bought a "mint" 46k 95 Transam. It was in the shop at least once a month for the first few. Things start going wrong. Clutches, water pumps, optis, differentials. window motors, headlight motors, fuel pumps, etc. You might be a lucky one and not have any of these problmes for a while, but expect them.

It's supposed to drain onto the carpet?

Damn, that's not what I wanted to hear. The engine looks like a royal pita to work on. Maybe I should have kept my mustang.

If you can take a picture of where it's actually leaking from, or find a pic of it on shoebox's website, I'm sure we can figure out how to fix it.

it is. It's a real PITA, but they're great engines that don't really require all that much work very often.

Your opti will probably need replaced at some point in the near future, people make it sound worse then it really is. Few hours to replace and you're good for another 7-8 years. Your coolant sensor will probably go out soon as well, they're like $20 from Dal and take 30 mins to replace.

I think you may have been unlucky... don't discourage him back into owning a mustang! Anyways they aren't that bad at all, yes just like any car, parts do wear out in due time. With 51k you will have a while yet. Enjoy the car, Wish i knew more about the AC system. Good luck.

If the tube is clear then there may be a crack in the plastic housing that the evaporator is in. I would pull some of the stuff out of the way to gain access to the housing, turn on the air and visually inspect for water coming out. good luck.
