High Idle of SS Camaro 6sp.
What is the correct idle speed for the 2000 ss Camaro? Bought car 2 yrs ago with 14 thousand miles on it. For the past several months, have had problems with car idling way too high. Has brought up service engine soon light several times, but doesn't stay on consistantly. Sounds like engine is racing. Have repair book, and says it could be idle air control valve or throttle body problem. Is there a shop in North Florida area I could take it and not get the shaft? Am female and they can smell us coming! Is this a common problem?

Re: High Idle of SS Camaro 6sp.
Unless it's modified, it should idle around 750. You might need to find someone with a scanner that can read your IAC counts. The IAC controls your idle by opening/closing the tb slightly. They should be around 30-50 stock (in neutral w/ A/C off). If the car has been modified (ie - cam installed, different throttle body, etc.), it could be a tuning issue because your airflow tables are off in the computer and need to be tweaked with something like HPTuners or EFILive Flashscan. Those are somewhat sophisticated for the common person who would rather not dive into the world of tuning their own car. Just a heads up if you decide to head in that direction. G/L!

Be sure to check out www.shbox.com With a little time and patients you can save a lot of $$ doing work yourself.
If you decide to work on it yourself you can find everything you would ever want to know on this (and it's memebers) sites. I like this option because I trust my on work and my labor is much cheaper than what mechanics want. If you have time to read and a few tools you can fix many issues at home.
