The same transmission is in the Corvette and Viper as is in the Camaro and Firebird, although there are some small variances between them.

Not really. A Corvette T56 is radically different than the F-Body T56.

The Corvette C4 never used the B-W/Tremec T56, it was a ZF 6-speed. If they managed to transplant a C4 ZF into the F-Body, they wasted their time. It will look different than the T56, and will not show the Borg-Warner or Tremec name tag.

ZF 6-speed:

B-W/Tremec F-Body T56 (LT1 version):

The C5 and the new C6 use the Tremec T56, but it has virtually no dimensional similarity to the F-Body, Viper or Mustang SVO T56.... it is located in the rear of the Corvette, sandwiched in-line between the Corvette's torque tube and the rear differential housing.

No way this transmission....

...could be used in an F-Body.

I thought these were all fundamentally the same transmission with limited differences to accomodate individual cars. For instance, lots of people are using the Viper output shaft in the Camaro for added strength etc.

Vipers, F-Body's and Cobra T56's are very similar.... some dimensional differences and component material/strength differences. A Corvette is almost totally different. Look at the picture. Yes, some of the parts can be interchanged, but it could not be bolted into an F-Body, so it is very unlikely that the car blackztpi is asking about has a Corvette 6-speed.

Vettes use a transaxle with IRS
F-bodies use a trans, a diff, and a solid axle.
They're about as different as you can get and still both be RWD.

Putting a transaxle from a Vette into an f-body would make swapping in a 9 inch from an old car look like a piece of cake. I've actually wondered before if anyone has ever done this but then I figured it would just be easier to buy the Vette.

i kind of wondered. from what i know, it looks like a pretty stock setup. nothing rigged or fancied, or even appears to be touched. I don't care if it's not a vette t-56, but i sure hope he didn't lie to me about the "rebuild" it underwent. he told me the 3.73's were put in a rebuilt rear as well, and they were. so hopefully the trans was done too. syncrhos feel to good to be stock at 88K miles. thanx guys
