I moved my timing from 20* to 27* at idle to smooth it out a bit. Also did the same for low rpm low map to help with surg. As always save a copy of your file before you modifiy it.

If the idle is too loopy increase the rpm a little to smooth it out.

But is there a general rule that advancing timing will increase HP will retarding timing will decrease it?

What determines how much timing you need?

Head design (porting), cam profile, fuel, altitude, CR, etc will determine the total advance your motor will like. Will some general info on these items people can make recomendations but you will only know for sure by making changes and testing the results.
