Wheels and Sizes?

I am looking at buying a set of wheels but I am torn between an 18 and a 17 inch wheel for a 1994 Pontiac Trans Am GT. First off how is the clearence going to be with a stock ride hieght and 18 inch wheels. Secondly If I were to choose to go to a 17X7 wheel would that be any less performance as to a 18X8 or 18X9.5 I would love to go with the 18's but unfortunetley Im afraid they will not fit right. Please give me all the info you can on this matter it will be greatly appreciated!

Okay for one why are you even looking at 17x7's? Two yes 18's will fit. I actually have a set of Boyds that are 18x10s and my car is dropped about an inch. Actually the person i got the rims from had his T/A droped 2inches. If you going to spend any money on rims then you shouldnt waste time with 17x7s unless there is some sort of reason you want those. If its cause of money then get the Vette rims. They arent that expensive and sold all over.

Oh and obviously a 18x9.5 wheel will be a good bit wider then a 17x7 which gives you more rubber on the ground, giving you pick the right size tire for it.

Id go with the 17x9. Thats what my hawk has (i think) and it is big enough so you can handle like a crazy ****, launch hard, and not get killed on expensive tires (275/40/17). Anything 315 and up and you are looking at 1200 for tires every time you change them.

Tirerack has 315/35/17's for as low as 152 a piece.

Well any street tires are gonna run you ALOT. The only tire under $200 that isnt competetion or some sort of drag radial is a sumitomo for $155 and those arent very good tires anyway.

Goodyear F1s are 263 each.

If you get 275s then you can buy Kuhmos for 113 each and are better tires than the Sumitomos.

Okay if you run a wider wheel you dont have to have 315s on the back. Regardless even if he sticks with 275's 17x7s are going to suck. They have plenty of tires that are 200 dollars and under that are good.

The Sumitomo's are 155 a piece. I agree they aren't the best 315 tire, but I currently have them and they fit the bill. With over 500+ RWH at the flick of a switch, street tires for me are just to get from point A to B anyway.

I'll get some pics tonight and post them for you, I think they handle just fine with my set up and for the price I'm very happy. I got tons of complements all weekend!!
