What tires to get?

2000 Camaro SS 6spd, Headers/full exhaust...

I race at the track about once or twice a month, but not very often... It's my daily driver and is driven in the rain (I live in Maryland). Looking to buy new rear and front tires, what do you guys recommend?

Tires in my sig.

Awesome wet and all-around traction and they'll cut 2.0s.

I'm on my 2nd set.

They don't make the SZ50's anymore. Not that I could find at least. I bought their replacements - the Firehawk Wide Ovals. They hook pretty good at the track...1.9's all day long with the A4. I had the AVS ES 100s and they were pretty good too, but I'd suggest the Firestones over the Yokohamas any day.

Re: What tires to get?

Either the KDWs listed above or Goodyear Eagle F1 GS D3 which is what I have...OUTSTANDING wet weather traction along with great dry traction. I am currently on 285/40/17s....but supposedly on the SS/WS6 rim you can safely use 315s. Do not use 315 all the way around though....stick with 275/285 in front or you'll be pulling all over

Re: What tires to get?

My wife's Grand Am GT can spin her KDWS w/a stock 3400, not sure how great they'd be w/an LS1. W/a treadlife rating of 400 they can't be that great. I'm about to run some KD's though. Got a pair for $230 shipped. Can't complain about $115/tire.

I wouldn't run a 315 on an SS/WS6 rim. That size really needs an 17x11" wheel and SS/WS6 are 17x9. You CAN run them, but then again you CAN run 140 mph on an S rated tire too. Doesn't mean its safe.

Depending on what kind of racing you're doing. You'll want a taller sidewall for drags and shorter/stiffer sidewall for scca type events.

I have been hearing good things about the Kumho MX, but they're only $20 cheaper than the GS-D3. Might want to take a look at Avon tyres (aka tires).

The question is, how soft are you willing to go?

Those tires I have and I can't hook up at all with these tires.

I have the Yokohama AVS ES100's too, in the rear. I spin a little sometimes, but way better then the tires I had before. I had Falkens before.

Re: What tires to get?

I've been very happy with:

BF goodrich KDW T/A

and my newest tire purchase: Fuzion ZRi. The fuzions are cheap, and outperform most $200 tires. W rated, excellent temp and treadwear ratings, etc. Check em out, I highly recommend them. Off the line traction is excellent too.

Re: What tires to get?

id go with nitto DRs.i have them on my SS and i dont use anything else.

theyre ok in the rain but do suck in the snow.

theyre a good overall tire thatll give you descent traction at the track.theyre good for about 15k with occasional track use.

I wouldn't recommend DR's for the rain. Difference of opinion.

I went from the falkens to the eagle f1 gs d3s. They're great tires, best hooking tires i've had other than my Nitto DR's of course. The falkens were awful btw.

Re: What tires to get?

I did a ton of research and went with the fuzion zri. I thought i'd regret it for only $319 out the door for the set (expecting to only get what I paid for) but they are hands down the best tire I've ever had. They hook well with my 6 speed lt1, wet traction is outstanding and after 5,000 abusive miles they still look like new. As an added bonus they shine up real nice too! Check out tirerack.com to see a ton of reviews on a bazillion different tires. I went with a local dealer here in mi. though for the best price. Firestone dealership on west road in trenton mi, 48183. ask for jason
